Conclusion

Congratulations to the Lafayette Generals for winning the 2001 title.  Lafayette was 13-11 at one point in the season but the coaching staff never gave up on the team and the team never gave up on themselves.  The Generals have now won championships in 1942, 1950, 1953, 1957, 1979, and 2001.  How can you forget the irrepressible tourney MVP Robert Madison who lived his dream and helped provide Coach Adkins with a wonderful birthday present -- a state championship?

Male came into the tourney an overwhelming favorite to win the title but came up a bit short.  Coach Bryce Hibbard has a lot of talent returning and could be back next year.  This tournament had many memorable moments and players to watch.  Russellville's Teco Dickerson is a wonderful athlete and showcased his talents this week.  I also enjoyed top players perform like South Laurel's Richie Riley and Madisonville's Michael Haney who I didn't have an opportunity to see much this year.  Much was written about the schools that didn't make it to the Sweet 16:  Bowling Green, Paducah Tilghman, Ballard, Scott County, Lexington Catholic, Madison Central, Pleasure Ridge Park, etc.  Most of these schools will be back -- they don't rebuild, merely reload.

The agony of defeat -- both coaches (Fairdale's Lloyd Gardner and Lafayette's Don Adkins) consoling Coric Riggs after Fairdale's narrow loss to Lafayette.  Riggs left it all on the floor and any coach appreciates a great effort.

I still believe the Kentucky High School state tourney is still one of the greatest shows in hoops.  I enjoy the format and even when one or two teams appear to be head and shoulders above their competition, someone can always surprise, peak at the right time, and bring home the big trophy.  Only one team can win the big trophy but there are no losers in the Sweet 16.

What's next?  I'm usually exhausted after the state tournament and vow to take a rest from basketball.  However, in a few days I'll call the Mills brothers to get information on AAU play and also call Rick Bolus concerning his camps in Georgetown.  I really enjoy seeing the young players progress from one season to another. Some of the young players I have seen some into their own during the summer are Ross Neltner (Highlands), Mike Brock (Simon Kenton), Mike Bush (Male), Rojan Rondo (Eastern), Robbie Simpson (Seneca) and too many others to name.  Basketball appears to be a year around game and many have stated that players are made in the summer and teams are made in the winter.
