The organizers of this event have put together an exciting day of basketball with nine varsity scrimmages on the slate at the Rev. Bueter Athletic Center. There are also seven junior varsity scrimmages set for the old gym. The schedule is as follows:

Some of the top boys expected to perform today are 6-6 Sr. Brian Lewin (Covington Catholic), 6-7 Sr. Eric Ely (Bell County), 6-4 Sr. Robert Daniels and 6-5 Sr. Brian Silverhorn (Shelby County), 6-6 Jr. Tory Meagher (St. Xavier), 6-7 Sr. Brad Lightle and 6-2 Jr. Maurice Blakey (PRP), 5-10 Sr. C-3 Brown and 6-3 Sr. Coy Zerhusen (Scott County), 6-4 Sr. Ryan Morton and 6-3 So. Demetrius Green (Lexington Catholic), 6-2 Sr. John Berry (Trinity), 6-4 Sr. Kevin Reinhardt (Campbell County), 6-5 Jr. Scott Tarvin, 6-2 Jr. Cameron Jackson (West Jessamine), etc. I do not have any info on the two Ohio squads.
Some of the top girls expected to play today are 5-11 Sr. Erin Brown (Scott County), 5-7 Sr. Erica Hallman (Holmes), 6-0 Jr. Chelsea Chowning and 5-10 Jr. Sarah Schell (Lexington Catholic), 5-5 Sr. LaShanda Upchurch (Somerset), etc.
Today’s games will consist of two 15-minute halves with the score being reset at the half. I will combine the two scores for the sake of clarity and the stats mentioned have been provided courtesy of the WL Stats crew. Please remember that these are scrimmages, but with the regular season beginning next week the coaches should be fine tuning their lineups.
Game No. 1 –
Covington Catholic (Boys) vs. Bell County
Covington Catholic took a 40-24 halftime lead and won by a score of 76-64. Bell County committed 24 turnovers and Covington Catholic had a 29-11 advantage in points off turnovers. Covington Catholic was led today by 6-6 Sr. Brian Lewin with 15 points. 5-10 Sr. Marc Bain, 6-3 Sr. Greg Hiltz, and 5-10 Sr. Matt Nestheide added 12, 10, and 10 points respectively. Bell County was led by 6-4 Sr. Jimmy Corum with 15 points and 10 rebounds. 6-7 Sr. Eric Ely added 14 points and 11 rebounds. 6-3 Sr. Trae Winkler and guard Jason Messer added 14 and 13 points respectively.
Game No. 2 –
Scott County (Girls) vs. Pendleton County
Scott County raced out to a 24-12 halftime lead and won by a score of 66-38. The Scott County defense forced 30 Pendleton County turnovers. Scott County was led today by 5-11 Sr. Erin Brown with 27 points and 13 rebounds. Pendleton County was led by 5-9 Jr. Megan Wood with 20 points and 15 rebounds.
Game No. 3 –
Mercy (Girls) vs. Covington Holmes
Covington Holmes took a 28-27 lead at the half but due to the unique rules of scrimmages this game ended up as a 56-56 tie. Holmes was led in scoring by Jonna Patterson, 5-8 Sr. Valencia Jackson, and 5-7 Sr. Erica Hallman with 13, 12, and 10 points respectively. Hallman also dished out seven assists and had seven steals. Mercy was led by Brittany Kittel with 13 points. Paula Person and Erica Hardy added 9 and 8 points respectively.
Game No. 4 –
Shelby County (Boys) vs. Wellston (OH)
Shelby County led 41-26 at halftime and cruised to an 81-54 victory. Shelby County outrebounded Wellston by a margin of 46-28. The victorious Rockets were led today by their dynamic duo 6-4 Sr. Robert Daniels with 27 points and 6-5 Sr. Brian Silverhorn with 23 points. Daniels and Silverhorn each pulled down 10 rebounds. 6-1 Jr. Morgan Johnson and 6-1 Sr. Brad Young led Wellston with 12 and 11 points respectively.
Game No. 5 – Pleasure
Ridge Park (Boys) vs. St. Xavier
PRP led 41-27 at the half and gained a 76-56 decision over St. Xavier. PRP was led by 6-2 Jr. Maurice Blakey, 6-7 Sr. Brad Lightle, and 6-2 Sr. LaDavid DeLorch with 19, 14, and 12 points respectively. 5-11 Jr. Carlos Williams had 9 points, 9 assists, and 9 steals. St. Xavier was led by 6-2 Sr. Conner Breen, 6-6 Jr. Tory Meagher, and 5-11 Sr. Brian Davidson with 16, 14, and 12 points respectively. Meagher also pulled down 17 rebounds.
Game No. 6 – Scott
County (Boys) vs. Lexington Catholic
Scott County and Lexington Catholic always draw a crowd – even in a scrimmage. Scott County roared from behind to take a 44-43 lead at the half. Poor shooting (8 of 35) in the second half doomed the Cardinals and Lexington Catholic pulled away for a 85-69 victory. Catholic was led today by 6-3 So. William Graham with 23 points. 6-3 So. Demetrius Green added 18 points and 9 rebounds. Scott County was led by 6-3 Jr. Jeremy Nettles who tallied 22 points on 9 of 12 from the field and 4 of 5 from the free throw line. Nettles also pulled down six rebounds. 5-10 Sr. C-3 Brown added 15 points and 9 rebounds.
Game No. 7 –
Trinity (Boys) vs. Campbell County
Trinity took a 37-19 halftime lead and held on for a 63-53 victory. Trinity was led tonight by 6-4 Jr. Chris McCoy, 6-2 Sr. John Berry, and 6-7 Sr. Dan Russ with 12, 10, and 10 points respectively. 6-5 Sr. Kevin Reinhardt of Campbell County lived up to his pre-season billing as he poured in 33 points and pulled down 9 rebounds. Trinity first year coach Mike Szabo has worked the Shamrocks hard this summer and this traditional football power appears to be ready to make strides in the roundball arena.
Game No. 8 – West
Jessamine (Boys) vs. Moeller (OH)
Moeller took a 49-34 halftime lead but West Jessamine stormed back to gain an 81-81 tie (once again the unique scrimmage rules allows the sum of the two halves to end in a tie decision). Moeller was led tonight by 6-0 Sr. Jim Wood, 6-4 Sr. John Kuntz, and 6-4 Jr. Andrew Juenger with 18, 14, and 13 points respectively. Kuntz also pulled down 8 rebounds. West Jessamine was led by 6-2 Jr. Cameron Jackson, 6-5 Jr. Scott Tarvin, and Andy Placido with 17, 13, and 12 points respectively.
Game No. 9 – Lexington
Catholic (Girls) vs. Somerset
Catholic turned up the defense tonight, took a 35-16 lead at the half, and pulled away for an 80-48 decision over Somerset. Catholic forced the visitors into 35 turnovers and was credited with 26 steals. Chelsea Chowning, a very smooth 6-0 Jr., led the way with 23 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists, and 6 steals. 5-10 Jr. Sarah Schell, who hit the last second shot to give Catholic last season’s state championship, added 15 points and 8 steals. Regina Carney, a 5-6 Jr. guard, had a big night with 18 points and 7 steals. Somerset was led by LaShanda Upchurch with 12 points. Amy Honeycutt and Madison Flowers each tallied 8 points.
This was an excellent day of high school hoops and the stars performed as expected. On a personal note, I was very impressed with Lexington Catholic’s William Graham and Scott County’s Jeremy Nettles. Graham may well be the most improved player in the state. William is 6-3 and still appears to be growing. Nettles has worked hard this summer on his ball handling and now takes the ball to the hoop with authority. He has had two excellent scrimmages of late against quality opponents – Corbin and Lexington Catholic. Shelby County’s Robert Daniels appears to always be in position to scoop up the loose ball for an easy basket. Lucky? – I don’t think so. Campbell County’s Kevin “Rhino” Reinhardt can score in a hurry – 25 points in the last half. Northern Kentucky will have their hands full with Covington Catholic. PRP is incredibly deep and keeps bringing in interchangeable parts. St. Xavier’s Tony Meagher continues to impress and Bell County will compete with their talented front line. West Jessamine will work hard under their new coach Matthew Yates and he has talent to work with this season. Lexington Catholic and Scott County will be good – Coaches Haney and Hicks would not accept otherwise. Trinity will surprise some people this year.
The girls’ game only bets better. Covington Holmes has a Miss Basketball candidate in Erica Hallman. Pendleton County’s Megan Wood and Scott County’s Erin Brown had good games today. Mercy will be very competitive in the ‘ville. Coach Judy Mason’s Somerset squad should compete for 12th region honors. Coach Greg Todd continues to keep the Lexington Catholic machine rolling and enters the season as the defending state champion. Chelsea Chowning and Sarah Schell are the “silent assassins” – you know they’re good but you don’t get the whole story until you check the complete stat lines.
