The All “A” Classic started in 1980 with eight teams and in 1990 became a true statewide championship with 16 boys regional tournament winners competing for the championship. Champions crowned to date are 1980 Covington Holy Cross, 1981 Bellevue, 1982 Carlisle County, 1983 Walton-Verona, 1984 Oneida Baptist, 1985 Harlan, 1986 Muhlenberg Central, 1987 Covington Holy Cross, 1988 Bardstown, 1989 Central City, 1990 University Heights, 1991 University Heights, 1992 Lexington Catholic, 1993 Dilce Combs, 1994 Harlan, 1995 Harlan, 1996 University Heights, 1997 Lexington Catholic, 1998 University Heights, 1999 University Heights, 2000 Newport Central Catholic, 2001 Glasgow, and 2002 University Heights.

Game No. 1 Christian Academy of Louisville (10-3) (Region 7) vs. Frankfort (15-5) (Region 11)
Christian Academy of Louisville coach Jeff Imlay started the following lineup: 6-2 Jr. Travis Adkinson, 6-3 Sr. Mitch Owen, 6-4 Sr. Jon Cabal, 6-0 Sr. Tim Akin, and 5-8 Sr. Scott Stewart. Frankfort coach Scott Chalk countered with 6-4 Sr. Chris Current, 6-3 Sr. Clinton Hall, 6-4 So. Torian Robertson, 6-0 So. Will Current, and 6-2 Fr. Aaron Dunaway.
Christian Academy missed 12 of their first 13 shots and never recovered as Frankfort won the tourney opener by a score of 75-47. Frankfort held a 53.3%-31.4% edge from the field and outrebounded Christian Academy 48-24. Frankfort was led today by Chris Current with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Aaron Dunaway and 6-0 Jr. Myron Moore added 16 and 13 points respectively. Torian Robertson added nine points and pulled down nine rebounds. Jon Cabal led Christian Academy with 11 points and eight rebounds. 6-1 Sr. Josh Bordas added nine points.

Bishop Brossart defeated Owen County 45-28 in a game in which both teams had problems finding the basket. Bishop Brossart was 30.9% from the field and nine of 16 from the free throw line, while Owen County was 30.6% from the field and only three of 12 from the charity stripe. Bishop Brossart held a 44-28 margin on the boards. The victors were led by Evan McDole with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Kevin Smith added 10 points and eight rebounds, while Jeff Henry added nine points. Owen County was led by Brandon Mills and Landon Marston with seven and six points respectively. Mills also had eight rebounds and blocked five shots.

St. Henry was led by Todd Vieth with 29 points, 13 rebounds, and five steals. Matt Fabiani added 11 points and Michael Schmidt chipped in with six points and 10 rebounds. Wes Hamilton led Whitesville Trinity with 12 points and eight rebounds. Mark Evans and 6-0 So. Justin Evans added nine points each.

This game had a bizarre ending as a Hazard basket in the third quarter was erroneously given to Mayfield and this error was never corrected. The score at the end of regulation should have been 56-56 which would have necessitated overtime. However, the score on the board read Mayfield 58 Hazard 54. Mayfield shot 45.1% from the field, was 10 of 17 from the free throw line, and claimed 30 rebounds. Hazard shot 47.8% from the field, was six of nine from the free throw line, and also pulled down 30 rebounds. Mayfield was led by Derrick Parrott with 18 points, six rebounds, and seven assists, while Jerome Saxton added 14 points and 13 rebounds. Raphael Kendrick chipped in with 13 points. Parker Carter led a balanced Hazard attack with 10 points while Lamar Williams pulled down 11 rebounds.

Somerset’s defense did a good job holding Ty Rogers, who had been averaging 31 ppg, to 24 points on their way to a 55-47 victory over Lyon County. Somerset held a 37.5%-35.2% edge over Lyon County in field goal shooting and held a 40-29 advantage in rebounds. Somerset was led today by Trey Sharpe with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Josh Thompson added eight points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Lyon County was led by Ty Rogers with 24 points and seven rebounds while Chris Wilson added 13 points.

The also did an excellent job doubling down on defense to limit Isaiah Mills to eight field goal attempts for the evening. The victors were led by Patrick Carey, Kevan Kelly, Michael Voils, and 6-1 Sr. Ryan Cecil with 16, 13, 12, and 11 points respectively. Kelly also pulled down 10 rebounds. Corbin was led by Johnny Hammons and Jeremy Farmer with 16 points each. Mills added 11 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Jordan Noble chipped in with six points and 10 rebounds.

Rose Hill went on an 18-3 run that erased an eight point deficit and allowed them to take a 42-35 halftime lead on their way to a 77-65 victory over Paintsville. Rose Hill held a 52.8%-37.7% edge in field goal shooting and was 11 of 22 from the three point line. The victors were led by O. J. Mayo with 31 points and 12 rebounds. Zach Gillum added 20 points, including five three point goals. Stuart Rutledge led Paintsville with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Shane Simpkins, Peyton Conley, and Adam Collins added 12, 12, and 11 points respectively.

Holy Cross shot 36.5% from the field and was six of 10 from the free throw line. The victors were led by Radford Graves, Zack Grace, and Michael Emberton with 16, 16, and 13 points respectively. Graves also pulled down 13 rebounds. Holy Cross was led by Derek Lindsey with 13 points. Michael Brumleve added 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds while Brent Richard added 11 points.

St. Henry was led by Michael Schmidt with 22 points. Matt Otte and Matt Fabiani added 10 and nine points respectively. Mayfield was led by Raphael Kendrick with 16 points and eight rebounds. Derrick Parrott added 13 points, seven rebounds, and six assists while Jerome Saxton added nine points and nine rebounds.

Trey Sharpe hit a driving layup with one second remaining on the clock to give Somerset a 44-43 victory over Bethlehem. This capped a big comeback for Somerset, who trailed by 17 points in the first half as Bethlehem nailed seven three-pointers in the opening 16 minutes. Somerset shot 34.1% from the field while Bethlehem could only manage 29.8% including a frigid 14.3% in the second half. Somerset was led today by Trey Sharpe with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Nathan Bray added 14 points, all in the third quarter. Bethlehem was led by Patrick Carey with 12 points. Kevan Kelly added 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Rose Hill Christian was led by O. J. Mayo with 22 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Marques Dawson added 14 points and nine rebounds. Zach Gillum and David Frazier chipped in with 13 and 10 points respectively. Monroe County was led by Radford Graves with 24 points and 13 rebounds. 5-11 Jr. Josh Roper and Zack Grace added 13 and 12 points respectively.

St. Henry started off extremely cold, missing nine of their first 12 shots and falling behind 17-8, before rallying both on offense and defense to defeat Frankfort by a score of 58-50. St. Henry’s defense was the real hero as they held Frankfort star Chris Current, who was averaging 25 ppg, to 13 points on four of 16 shooting from the field. St. Henry was led today by Todd Vieth with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Matt Otte and Michael Schmidt added 11 and 10 points respectively. Frankfort was led by Aaron Dunaway with 19 points. Chris Current added 13 points and eight rebounds while Torian Robertson chipped in with nine points and pulled down 13 rebounds.

St. Henry coach Dave Faust countered with 6-4 Sr. Matt Otte, 6-4 Sr. Todd Vieth, 6-2 Sr. Michael Schmidt, 6-1 Sr. Ross Czarnik, and 5-10 Sr. Matt Fabiani.
St. Henry outscored Rose Hill 22-4 in the third quarter on their way to an 81-62 victory and the tourney championship. St. Henry shot 62% from the field, 15 of 19 from the free throw line and pulled down 38 rebounds while Rose Hill was 39.4% from the field, two of two from the free throw line, and had 23 rebounds. St. Henry was led by Michael Schmidt, Todd Vieth, and Matt Otte with 20, 19, and 17 points respectively. Otte pulled down 13 rebounds. Matt Fabiani added 10 points and dished out 13 assists. O. J. Mayo led Rose Hill with 25 points and nine rebounds. Mark King added 11 points.

Conclusions
Dave Cantrall’s All ‘A’ rankings which appeared in the Lexington
Herald-Leader on February 6th had Rose Hill and St. Henry ranked
No. 1 and No. 2. They ended up in
the championship game with St. Henry taking home the big trophy. St. Henry personified the team concept
with four players being named to the all-tourney team. Rose Hill 8th grader O.J.
Mayo had an excellent tournament and Frankfort Fr. Aaron Dunaway
established himself as a young player to watch.
