The All “A” Classic included four girls teams in 1991. The 1992 version expanded to include eight girls teams and in 1993 the tournament again expanded to include a full complement of 16 teams. Winners crowned to date are 1991 Cumberland, 1992 Cumberland, 1993 Nicholas County, 1994 Louisville Holy Cross, 1995 Monroe County, 1996 Louisville Holy Cross, 1997 Hazard, 1998 Hazard, 1999 Bishop Brossart, 2000 Somerset, 2001 Jackson County, 2002 Jackson County, and 2003 Clinton County.
Wednesday, February 4th - Day 1
Game No. 1 Louisville Holy Cross (13-10) (Region 6) vs. Whitesville Trinity (13-6) (Region 3)
Louisville Holy Cross coach Charlie Just started the following lineup: 5-7 So. Amber Wright, 5-9 Sr. Valerie Shields, 6-2 Sr. Sara Eilers, 5-4 Sr. Jessica Pfeiffer, and 5-4 Sr. Julie Bowman. Whitesville Trinity coach Emily Mills countered with 5-7 Sr. Rachel Kaelin, 6-0 Sr. Lauren Mattingly, 5-11 Sr. Victoria Clouse, 5-6 Jr. Emily Bickett, and 5-6 Sr. Sarah McDaniel.
Louisville Holy Cross led 40-36 at the end of three quarters and pulled away in the final minutes to claim a 57-44 victory. Louisville Holy Cross held a 48.6%-28.6% margin in field goal shooting and outscored Whitesville Trinity 18-4 from the free throw line. Whitesville Trinity held a 39-31 rebound margin.
The victors were led by Sara Eilers with 21 points, eight rebounds, and seven blocked shots. Valerie Shields added 10 points while Julie Bowman chipped in with nine points, six rebounds, and four assists. Sarah McDaniel led Whitesville Trinity was led by with 17 points and seven rebounds. 5-5 Jr. Jamie Merritt came off the bench to tally nine points. Lauren Mattingly added eight points, pulled down nine rebounds, and dished out five assists. Victoria Clouse chipped in with seven points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

Christian Academy of Louisville held a 55%-21.4% advantage in field goal shooting on their way to a 54-41 victory over Caverna. The victorious Lady Centurions were led by Kristen Blake with 18 points. Ashley Fishback added 15 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Rudy Brents led Caverna with 17 points and nine rebounds. Cantera Ford added 14 points.

The score was tied 45-45 at the end of regulation but Betsy Layne, led by Kim Clark’s nine points in overtime, took a 59-49 victory. Betsy Layne shot 35.2% from the field, connected on 19 of 30 free throws, and pulled down 43 rebounds. Owen County shot 31% from the field, was eight of 12 from the charity stripe, and grabbed 39 rebounds.
Betsy Layne was led today by Whitney Lykens with 26 points, eight rebounds, and five steals. Kim Clark added 13 points and seven rebounds while Kristal Daniels chipped in with eight points, 12 rebounds, and four blocked shots. Kaylan Richardson led Owen County with 18 points and Katie Smith added 13 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Casey Perkins tallied 12 points, pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds, and dished out five assists.

Clinton County led 43-33 at the end of three quarters and pulled away in the final quarter for a 69-48 victory over Webster County. Clinton County shot 54.5% from the field, connected on 19 of 28 from the free throw line, and pulled down 32 rebounds. Webster County was 35.8% from the field and pulled down 30 rebounds.
Clinton County was led by Paige Guffey with 24 points and eight rebounds. Amber Guffey added 21 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Dorothy Papineau had a solid performance with 12 points on six of seven baskets from the field. Paula Carver led Webster County with 26 points and Caitlin Owen added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Cumberland roared out of the gate to take a 12-5 first quarter lead but Murray rallied to pull out a 39-33 victory. Murray held a 38.9%-26.4% field goal shooting advantage and was five of 13 from the three point line.
The victors were led by Christina Dunn with 15 points on five three point baskets. Brandi Vincent added 13 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Sheena Lee led Cumberland with 15 points and Megan Metcalfe added nine points and 11 rebounds. Erica Letanowsky only scored two points but she pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.

Whitesburg led 46-33 at the end of three quarters, withstood a West Carter rally, and claimed a 57-50 victory. Whitesburg shot 44.9% from the field, connected on 13 of 24 free throws, and pulled down 36 rebounds. West Carter shot 35.8% from the field, only visited the free throw line seven times, connecting on five shots, and grabbed 31 rebounds.
Whitesburg was led by Whitney Hogg with 18 points. Ashley Stidham added 12 points and Camille Cook chipped in with 11 points and 15 rebounds. Stephanie Hall led West Carter with 20 points and eight rebounds while Brandi Rayburn chipped in with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Covington Holy Cross held a 53.3%-37.8% field goal advantage and held a 38-13 rebound edge over Danville in a 62-46 opening round victory. Covington Holy Cross was 14 of 21 from the free throw line while Danville only visited the charity stripe four times, connecting on three shots. Danville held a 27-0 advantage on three point points as they were nine of 20 from beyond the arc.
The victors were led by Brittany Bass with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Rachel Lantry added 18 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Danville was led by Monica Vonderbrink with 17 points including five of nine from the three point line. Krystal Jackson chipped in with 13 points.

Paris led Lexington Christian Academy 28-23 at the end of three quarters, and Taylor Christman scored nine points in the final period to allow Paris to take a 46-33 victory. Paris shot 37.5% from the field including six of 19 from the three point line, was 16 of 26 from the free throw line, and pulled down 22 rebounds. Lexington Christian Academy shot 29.4% from the field, connected on 12 of 16 free throws, and grabbed 29 rebounds.
Taylor Christman led Paris with 12 points. 5-7 Jr. Sarah Yeiser and 5-7 So. Laurie Mitchell came off the bench to add nine and eight points respectively. Leah Anderson and Emily London led Lexington Christian Academy with nine points each.

Louisville Holy Cross shot 21.4% from the field, was four of 10 from the charity stripe, and captured 26 rebounds.
The victors were led by Meredith Marsh with 16 points including four three point baskets. Kristen Blake added 14 points and pulled down six rebounds. Sara Eilers led Louisville Holy Cross with seven points, six rebounds, and four blocked shots.

Betsy Layne shot 40% from the field, was nine of 13 from the free throw line, and grabbed 22 rebounds.
Amber Guffey led Clinton County with 26 points including 13 of 14 free throws, and pulled down 11 rebounds. Paige Guffey added 17 points. Kim Clark led Betsy Layne with 23 points and five steals. Whitney Lykens chipped in with 11 points.

Whitesburg shot 33.9% from the field, connected on five of 10 free throws, and pulled down 46 rebounds. Murray was 25.6% from the field, eight of 20 from the free throw line, and grabbed 34 rebounds.
The victors were led by Whitney Hogg, Cassie Whitaker, and Autumn Morris with 12, 10, and nine points respectively. Ashley Stidham added six points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Brandi Vincent led Murray with nine points and nine rebounds. Breanna Volp added seven points and 6-1 So. Jordan Huston added six points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

Covington Holy Cross hammered Paris by 27 in a December match-up but Paris turned the tables today with a 57-45 victory. Paris scored 22 points on 19 Covington Holy Cross turnovers. Paris shot 39.5% from the field and connected on 15 of 26 free throws, while Covington Holy Cross shot 36.2% from the field, connected on nine of 13 free throws.
Paris was led today by Taylor Christman with 31 points including a tourney record seven three point baskets. Iona Caulder added 11 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Brittany Bass and Amie Noll led Covington Holy Cross with 13 and 11 points respectively.

Clinton County survived an overtime against Christian Academy of Louisville to claim a 41-39 victory. Christian Academy missed a shot with three seconds remaining that would have tied the game. Clinton County was 30.6% from the field including seven of 19 from the three point line, connected on 12 of 17 free throws, and pulled down 21 rebounds. Christian Academy of Louisville shot 38.9% from the field, was seven of 10 from the free throw line, and pulled down 30 rebounds.
Clinton County was led by Paige Guffey with 19 points including five three point goals. Amber Guffey added 11 points. Dorothy Papineau added six points and pulled down seven rebounds. Papineau also had a key steal in regulation that set up the score to send the game to overtime. Meredith Marsh led Christian Academy of Louisville with 13 points and seven assists. Kristen Blake added 12 points and Ashley Fishback chipped in with four points and 10 rebounds.

Paris was 21.2% from the field, only visited the free throw line eight times, connecting on four shots, and grabbed 34 rebounds.
The victors were led by Whitney Hogg with 15 points and six rebounds. Camille Cook added 13 points and nine rebounds while Ashley Stidham scored eight points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Taylor Christman led Paris with 12 points and Natalie Tubbs contributed seven points and six rebounds.

Game No. 15 Whitesburg (21-3) vs. Clinton County (17-7) Championship
Whitesburg coach Dickie Adams started the following lineup: 5-9 Jr. Whitney Hogg, 5-10 Jr. Camille Cook, 6-0 Sr. Ashley Stidham, 5-7 Sr. Cassie Whitaker, and 5-5 So. Autumn Morris. Clinton County coach Ronnie Guffey countered with 5-8 Jr. Jessica Curry, 5-6 So. Jessica Cummings, 5-10 Jr. Dorothy Papineau, 5-7 Jr. Amber Guffey, and 5-8 Jr. Paige Guffey.
Clinton County led 43-34 at the end of three quarters and had to survive a Whitesburg rally to gain a 58-56 victory. Whitesburg tied the score at 56-56 with 15 seconds remaining on the clock but Clinton County’s Amber Guffey nailed two free throws with four seconds remaining in the game to provide the winning margin. Whitesburg’s shot at the buzzer fell short and Clinton County celebrated their second consecutive All “A” Classic title. Clinton County shot 61.3% from the field, connected on 15 of 24 free throws, and pulled down 17 rebounds. Whitesburg was 41.7% from the field, connected on 14 of 20 free throws, and pulled down 30 rebounds.
Paige Guffey led Clinton County with 17 points and tourney MVP Amber Guffey added 16 points and dished out eight assists. Jessica Cummings came up big today with 11 points including three of three from the three point line. Whitesburg was led by Camille Cook with 19 points and eight rebounds. Whitney Hogg added 14 points.

Conclusion
This was an excellent tourney and an outstanding week of basketball. There were no “super” teams in this
tourney but a well-balanced tourney with several good teams contending for the
tourney title. When the smoke
cleared and all the games were played, Clinton County claimed their second
title in a row. This year’s
championship run had to be especially sweet as they lost three starters from
last year’s championship team.
Whitesburg had an excellent tourney run only coming two points short in the championship game. Christian Academy of Louisville also played well, losing by two to Clinton County in the semifinals. Taylor Christman had a 31 point, seven three point goal effort in an upset victory over Covington Holy Cross.
The Guffey twins were as good as advertised, but Clinton County coach Ronnie Guffey got good performances out of his other players in key situations. This was the 25th anniversary of the All “A” Classic and this particular tourney truly epitomizes what this tourney is meant to be. Congratulations to the founders for their insight and an excellent year to celebrate the 25th anniversary.
