The past 33 winners of this prestigious tourney were:  Presentation Academy (1973), Western (1974), Assumption (1975), Sacred Heart Academy (1976), Butler (1977, 1978), Assumption (1979), Allen County (1980), Clark County (1981), Mercy Academy (1982), Warren Central (1983), Marshall County (1984, 1985), Sacred Heart Academy (1986), Southern (1987, 1988), Manual (1989, 1990), Mercy Academy (1991), Henry Clay (1992), Clay County (1993, 1994), Bullitt East (1995), Warren East (1996), Elizabethtown (1997), Manual (1998), Montgomery County (1999), Assumption (2000), Sacred Heart Academy (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004), and Scott County  (2005).

Sixteen teams will compete for the 34th Annual L.I.T. Championship.  Teams competing January 24th will be: Eastern, Butler, Shelby County, Christian Academy of Louisville, Ballard, Mercy Academy, Male, and Sacred Heart Academy.  The winners of the first day’s games will meet Manual, Central Hardin, Iroquois, and Assumption on January 25th.  The winners of the second day’s games will play Franklin-Simpson, Scott County, South Laurel, and Paducah Tilghman in the quasrterfinals on on January 27th.  The semifinals and championship games will be contested on January 28th

January 24th - Day 1

Game No. 1  Eastern (10-7) vs. Butler (13-3)

Eastern coach Steve Ward started the following lineup:   5-10 Sr. Dymon Rondo, 5-10 Sr. Cierra Chisholm, 5-10 Jr. Tesha Wright, 5-10 Jr. Jamie Williams, and 5-2 Jr. Camila Aramburu.  Butler coach Terri Keown countered with 5-8 So. Tia Gibbs, 5-8 So. Brittany Harris, 5-10 Fr. Tiara Hopper, 5-6 So. Kara Pile, and 5-3 Sr. Nicole Holman.

Butler took a 49-40 decision over Eastern in a game in which neither team could find their shooting eye.  The victors held a decisive edge (45-34) in rebounds.

Butler shot 33.3% from the field, connected on 13 of 25 free throws and scored 13 points off 19 Eastern turnovers.  Eastern shot 25% from the field, connected on 14 of 23 free throws and only managed four points off 21 Butler turnovers.

Tia Gibbs led Butler with 24 points, 11 rebounds, and seven steals.  Brittany Harris added 10 points and six rebounds while Nicole Holman chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds.  Tiara Hopper was held scoreless but was still a force in the paint with seven rebounds and five blocked shots.

Dymon Rondo led Eastern with 26 points and nine rebounds.  Tesha Wright added seven points and six rebounds.

Game No. 2  Shelby County (11-7) vs. Christian Academy of Louisville (11-6)

Shelby County coach Sally Zimmerman started the following lineup:  5-9 Sr. Krystina Silverhorn, 5-10 Sr. Tara Milburn, 5-8 Jr. Amber Morrison, 5-4 So. Raechele Gray, and 5-8 Sr. Amanda Green.  Christian Academy of Louisville coach Don Rice countered with 5-8 Jr. Courtney Smith, 5-11 Fr. Clair Buchanan, 5-10 Jr. Abby Tappendorf, 5-7 So. Brooki Willoughby, and 5-9 Sr. Meredith Marsh.

Christian Academy of Louisville led 38-32 at the end of three quarters but Shelby County outscored the Lady Centurians 12-2 in the final quarter to take a 44-40 decision.  The victors had to overcome hot shooting from behind the arc (nine of 19) by CAL. 

Shelby County shot 43.2% from the field, connected on eight of eight free throws and pulled down 25 rebounds.  Christian Academy of Louisville shot 36.8% from the field, including nine of 19 from three point range.  CAL connected on three of six free throws and grabbed 20 rebounds. 

Amanda Green led the victors with 14 points and 11 rebounds.  Amber Morrison added 10 points.  CAL was led by Meredith Marsh with 17 points including four of seven from beyond the arc.  Marsh pulled down nine rebounds.  Clair Buchanan added 12 points.

Mercy Academy led 45-37 at the end of three quarters but Ballard outscored the Jaguars 20-6 in the final quarter to earn a 57-51 victory.  The victorious Lady Bruins shot 50% from the field in the first half and 60% for the second half. 

Ballard shot 55.3% from the field for the entire game, connected on 13 of 20 free throws and pulled down 31 rebounds.  Ballard scored 21 points off 17 Mercy turnovers.  Mercy Academy shot 34% from the field, connected on 16 of 21 free throws, and grabbed 27 rebounds.  The Jaguars scored 25 points off 22 Ballard turnovers. 

Teadra Elliott and Aurilie Derenoncourt led Ballard with 16 points each.  Reena Haliburton added 13 points and nine rebounds.  Mallory Luckett led Mercy Academy with 21 points.  Jenny Petrie added 10 points and six rebounds.

Sacred Heart defeated Male by a score of 67-54.  The Valkyries shot 44.1% from the field, connected on 15 of 25 free throws and pulled down 45 rebounds.  Sacred Heart scored 20 points off 17 Male turnovers.  Male shot 34.6% from the field, connected on 15 of 31 free throws and pulled down 40 rebounds.  Male scored 14 points off 16 Sacred Heart turnovers. 

Elizabeth Campbell led Sacred Heart with 21 points and 14 rebounds.  Caroline Klein added 10 points, six rebounds, and six assists.  Sarah Askin also chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds.  Katie Kopple scored nine points and pulled down nine rebounds.

Amy Barmore and Kristi White led Male with 12 and 10 points respectively.  Whitney Hodge only scored four points but pulled down 10 rebounds.

Ballard outscored Manual 15-8 in the final quarter to eke out a 41-40 victory over Manual.  The Lady Bruins shot 32.7% from the field including four of 17 from beyond the arc.  They connected on five of seven free throws, pulled down 23 rebounds, and scored 13 points off 19 Manual turnovers.  Manual shot 51.4% from the field including one of three from beyond the arc.  The Lady Crimsons connected on three of six free throws, and grabbed 30 rebounds, and scored 14 points off 10 Ballard turnovers.  Ballard made 14 more field goal attempts (49-35) than Manual. 

Reena Haliburton led Ballard today with 17 points and nine rebounds.  Marissa Williams led Manual with 18 points and 13 rebounds.  Brittany Wilson added 11 points and six rebounds.

Central Hardin shot 42.6% from the field, including three of eight from the three point line.  The Lady Bruins were 12 of 19 from the free throw line and pulled down 30 rebounds.  Sacred Heart was 33.9% from the field including only one of 11 from beyond the arc.  They connected on six of 10 free throws, pulled down 43 rebounds, and scored 10 points off 15 Central Hardin turnovers. 

Samantha Sheeran led Central Hardin with 18 points including two three point baskets.  Lauren Flood added 14 points and Deborah Linder chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds.  Elizabeth Campbell led Sacred Heart with 12 points, 12 rebounds, and six blocked shots.  Caroline Klein added 11 points and five rebounds, while Katie Kopple chipped in with seven points and nine rebounds.

Iroquois trailed 34-26 at halftime but outscored Butler 16-6 in the third quarter on their way to a 62-57 victory.  Iroquois held a 44-33 edge in rebounding and enjoyed a 21-10 margin in second chance points.  The Lady Raiders also held a 21-3 advantage in three point points.

Iroquois shot 37.3% from the field, including seven of 17 from beyond the arc.  The Lady Raiders connected on 11 of 26 free throws and scored 15 points off 13 Butler turnovers.  Butler shot 47.3% from the field, including one of five from the three point line.  The Bearettes connected on four of six free throws and scored 19 points off 13 Iroquois turnovers.

Kayla Hickman led Iroquois with 17 points including five of 10 shots from beyond the arc.  Adia Mathies added 15 points and 17 rebounds.  LaQuisha Wharton chipped in with 12 points and six assists.  Asia Mathies added 11 points and 5-11 Jr. Tiffany Simmons recorded four points and nine rebounds.  Tia Gibbs led Butler with 24 points and 11 rebounds.  5-11 So. Assumption shot 46.9% from the field including only one of four from beyond the arc.  The Rockets connected on 17 of 21 free throws, pulled down 33 rebounds, and scored eight points off 10 Shelby County turnovers.  Shelby County shot 28.1% from the field including four of 19 from the three point line.  They connected on six of nine free throws, grabbed 29 rebounds, and scored 18 points off 18 Assumption turnovers.

Scott County scored 29 points off 23 Ballard turnovers in a 73-51 victory.  The Lady Cardinals shot 45.8% from the field including three of 10 from beyond the arc.  They connected on 16 of 18 free throws, pulled down 35 rebounds, and held a 12-4 advantage in second chance points.  Ballard shot 39.6% from the field including five of 15 from the three point line.  The Lady Bruins connected on eight of 11 from the free throw line, and grabbed 29 rebounds.

Suzie Owens led Scott County with 22 points.  Rebecca Gray added 18 points and eight rebounds.  Kayla Moses chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Chelsea Lymon recorded 10 points.  Aurilie Derenoncourt led Ballard with 13 points and 11 rebounds.  Erin Rogers and Teadra Elliott added 11 points each.  Reena Haliburton added 10 points.

Assumption shot 43.1% from the field including zero of nine from the three point line.  The Rockets connected on five of nine free throws and scored 22 points off 20 South Laurel turnovers.  South Laurel shot 28.1% from the field including two of nine from beyond the arc.  The Lady Cards missed both free throw attempts.

Central Hardin raced out to a 17-8 first quarter lead on their way to a 67-52 victory over Paducah Tilghman.  Central Hardin shot 47.5% from the field including seven of 14 from the three point line.  The Lady Bruins connected on four of 10 free throws, pulled down 37 rebounds, and scored 18 points off 18 Paducah Tilghman turnovers.  Paducah Tilghman shot 40.4% from the field, connected on five of seven free throws, and grabbed 41 rebounds.  Paducah Tilghman scored 16 points off 12 Central Hardin turnovers.

Lauren Flood and Samantha Sheeran led Central Hardin with 19 and 13 points respectively.  5-9 Jr. Michelle Meiller added 13 points and nine rebounds.  Kylie Brady tallied seven points and dished out 10 assists.  Jerobia Hill, Natalie Schumpert, and Pam Bell each scored 13 points for Paducah.  Bell and Hill pulled down 10 and nine rebounds respectively.

Iroquois scored 21 points off 22 Assumption turnovers to nip the Rockets 62-61 in overtime.  The Lady Raiders played relatively error-free ball (10 turnovers) to offset a 45-35 rebounding advantage by Assumption.

Iroquois shot 35.5% from the field, including three of 11 from beyond the arc.  They connected on 15 of 21 free throws and held a 16-3 advantage in bench scoring.  Assumption shot 43.9% from the field including five of 12 from the three point line.  They connected on six of 10 free throws.

LaQuisha Wharton led Iroquois with 26 points and seven rebounds.  5-6 Fr. Stefonia Taylor added 13 points and Adia Mathies recorded 11 points and 10 rebounds.  Amber Norton led Assumption with 27 points and 13 rebounds.  Kelly Mitchell added 22 points and six rebounds.

Central Hardin coach Terry Buckles started the following lineup:  5-8 Sr. Deborah Linder, 5-8 Sr. Tiffany Gilpin, 5-6 So. Samantha Sheeran, 5-6 So. Kylie Brady, and 5-6 Sr. Lauren Flood.   Scott County coach Steve Helton countered with 6-0 Sr. Suzie Owens, 5-10 Jr. Rebecca Gray, 6-1 Jr. Holly Milburn, 5-4 So. Kayla Moses, and 5-6 Sr. Chelsea Lymon.

Scott County raced out to a 30-15 lead after the first quarter in a 90-73 victory over Central Hardin.  The Lady Cardinals shot 46.5% from the field including three of nine from the three point line.  They connected on 21 of 35 free throws, pulled down 54 rebounds, and scored 28 points off 19 Central Hardin turnovers.  Central Hardin shot 38.3% from the field including eight of 19 from beyond the arc.  The Lady Bruins connected on 19 of 29 free throws, grabbed 37 rebounds, and scored 21 points off 19 Scott County turnovers.

Suzie Owens led Scott County with 30 points and 12 rebounds.  Rebecca Gray added 27 points.  Lauren Flood led Central Hardin with 17 points including three three point baskets.  Samantha Sheeran and Kylie Brady added 12 and 11 points respectively.  Deborah Linder recorded 10 points and eight rebounds.  Tiffany Gilpin talled six points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

Kayla Moses, and 5-6 Sr. Chelsea Lymon.  Iroquois coach Al Northington countered with 5-7 Fr. Adia Mathies, 5-6 Fr. Stefonia Taylor, 5-6 Fr. Kayla Hickman, 5-2 Fr. Asia Mathies, and 5-0 Sr. LaQuisha Wharton.

Scott County held a commanding 62-32 advantage in rebounds in an 86-59 victory over Iroquois.  The Lady Cardinals led 42-27 at halftime and outscored the Iroquois 27-12 to take a 30 point lead 69-39 at the end of three quarters.

Scott County shot 43.8% from the floor, including five of 12 from the three point line.  They connected on 17 of 20 free throws and scored 14 points off 13 Iroquois turnovers.  Iroquois shot 31.9% from the field, including only one of 15 from beyond the arc.  The Lady Raiders connected on 14 of 22 free throws and scored 16 points off 19 Scott County turnovers.

Rebecca Gray led Scott County with 23 points including three three point baskets, and pulled down six rebounds.  Suzie Owens and Kayla Moses added 16 and 15 points respectively and pulled down 12 and nine rebounds respectively.  Chelsea Lymon chipped in with 13 points and Holly Milburn recorded four points and pulled down 10 rebounds. 

Adia Mathies led Iroquois with 15 points,12 rebounds, five assists, and three blocked shots.  LaQuisha Wharton and 5-11 Jr. Tiffany Simmons added 15 and 12 points respectively.

Conclusion

Congratulations to Scott County for their dominating performance in this year’s L.I.T.  The Lady Cards won three games with an average victory margin of 22 points per game.  Scott County averaged 83.0 ppg while holding their opponents to 61.0 ppg.  Assumption’s chances were hurt when 6-1 Jr. Thia Gholson suffered an injury and was unable to play in the quarterfinal and semifinal games.
