Graves County (27-5) (Region 1) vs. Russell (18-13) (Region 16)
Graves County coach Allan Hatcher started the following lineup: 6-2 Jr. Brett Wiggins, 6-0 Sr. Jamie King, 6-6 Sr. Randon Cravette, 6-2 Jr. Matt Kimbler, and 6-0 Sr. Zach Sims. Russell coach Steve Dodd countered with 6-3 Sr. Jacob Sizemore, 6-2 Sr. Jeremy Lavender, 6-2 Jr. Scott Gill, 6-1 Jr. Austin Blair, and 6-3 Jr. Jonathan VanHoose.
Graves County outscored Russell 20-4 in the second quarter to take control in a 42-27 victory. Graves County shot 72.2% from the field in the first half while holding Russell to 20% for the same period of time. The 27 points scored by Russell was the lowest total in the state tournament since 1958. The Eagles led 32-13 at halftime and were very deliberate in the second half, only attempting 12 shots from the field.
Graves County shot 53.3% from the field, including two of five from beyond the arc. The Eagles were eight of 15 from the free throws line, pulled down 23 rebounds, and scored 14 points off 11 Russell turnovers. Russell shot 25.7% from the field, including five of 19 from the three point line. The Red Devils connected on four of five free throws, and grabbed 20 rebounds. Graves County committed 12 turnovers but Russell could only convert for seven points.
Zach Sims led the victors with 18 points, all in the first half. Sims was seven of nine from the field, including two of three from beyond the arc and two of four free throws. Sims also dished out four assists and recorded four steals. Randon Cravette added 10 points and eight rebounds. Jonathan VanHoose led Russell with 10 points.

South Laurel led John Hardin 23-21 at halftime and 36-30 at the end of three quarters but pulled away in the final quarter to earn a 47-33 victory. South Laurel held John Hardin scoreless in the last 4:40 of the game and limited the Bulldogs to only three points in the final quarter.
South Laurel shot 50% from the field, including four of 11 from beyond the arc. The Cardinals connected on nine of 18 free throws, and pulled down 23 rebounds. John Hardin shot 27.3% from the field including three of 17 from the three point line. The Bulldogs connected on six of 17 free throws, pulled down 27 rebounds, and scored 16 points off 11 South Laurel turnovers. .
Ty Proffitt and Walt Allen led South Laurel with 12 and 11 points respectively. Trey Smith added seven points and pulled down nine rebounds. Brandon Bland led John Hardin with 13 points and six rebounds. Maze Stallworth added 12 points.

Johnson Central coach Mark Starns countered with 6-2 Sr. Ryan Fannin, 6-0 Jr. Jesse Meek, 6-2Sr. Kyle Rice, 6-0 Sr. Tyler Whitaker, and 6-2 Jr. Jamie McCarty.
Jeffersontown defeated Johnson Central by a score of 68-49. Johnson Central trailed 19-16 midway through the second quarter but Jeffersontown went on a 20-6 run to take control of the game. The Chargers extended the lead to 50-29 in the third quarter before Johnson Central went on a mini-run fueled by Jeffersontown turnovers to cut the lead to 52-39. Jeffersontown rallied again to regain control of the game.
Jeffersontown shot 56.8% from the field, including four of nine from the three point line. The Chargers were 14 of 20 from the free throw line, pulled down 25 rebounds and scored 25 points off 24 Johnson Central turnovers. Johnson Central shot 43.2% from the field, including six of 12 from three point line. The Golden Eagles connected on five of seven free throws, pulled down 20 rebounds and scored 12 points off 23 Jeffersontown turnovers.
Ceedrick Ware led Jeffersontown with 17 points and six rebounds. Nick Gagel added 13 points including three three point baskets and Thomas Coleman added 12 points, five rebounds, and three blocked shots. Dale Easley also reached double figures with 11 points. Jamie McCarty led Johnson Central with 12 points including three three point baskets. 6-2 Fr. Ian Welch added nine points, five rebounds, and four steals.

Shelby County held on down the stretch to defeat an athletic, quick, always hustling Christian County team 71-65. The Colonels attempted 33 more shots from the field (76-43) than Shelby County, but were doomed by their poor field goal accuracy (31.6%). The smaller Colonels also held a 48-30 advantage in rebounds including a 29-8 margin in offensive rebounds.
Shelby County shot 55.8% from the field, including four of 10 from beyond the arc. The Rockets connected on 19 of 35 free throws, and scored 13 points off 17 Christian County turnovers. Christian County shot 31.6% from the field, including only six of 31 from the three point line. The Colonels connected on 11 of 14 free throws, and scored 20 points off 20 Shelby County turnovers.
A. J. Slaughter led Shelby County with 26 points and five rebounds. Slaughter was six of eight from the field, including three of five from beyond the arc and 11 of 15 from the free throw line. Isreal Chambers added 14 points and eight rebounds. Jamar White chipped in 10 with points and eight assists. Keith Tandy led Christian County with 19 points, 12 rebounds, and four steals. Jamaizz Baker led added 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Walter McCombs chipped in with 13 points. 6-2 Jr. C. J. Trotter came off the bench to record eight points and eight rebounds.

Mason County’s Brad Pawsat hit two free throws with 14 seconds remaining in the game to allow the Royals to hold on for a 62-59 victory over Warren Central. Warren Central had a chance for the tie but missed a three point field attempt in the closing seconds. Mason County faced adversity in the first half as starting guard Russ Middleton went down with a hamstring injury and could not return to the game. However, 6-3 Jr. Tony Browning gave the Royals a spark off the bench with 13 points including three three point baskets.
Mason County shot 45.1% from the field, including six of 14 from beyond the arc. The Royals connected on 10 of 17 free throws, pulled down 36 rebounds, and scored 14 points off 10 Warren Central turnovers. Warren Central shot 46.9% from the field, including 10 of 18 from three point line. The Dragons connected on three of six free throws, pulled down 20 rebounds and scored 14 points off 13 Mason County turnovers.
Micah Turner led Mason County with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Darius Miller and Tyreese Scott each scored 14 points and Miller pulled down six rebounds. Tony Browning also reached double figures with 13 points. Jeremy Anderson and Joe Hood led Warren Central with 21 and 16 points respectively, with each connecting on four three point baskets. T. J. Woodard scored six points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

Apollo defeated Covington Catholic 57-53. The score was tied 51-51 when Covington Catholic coach Mike Listerman was awarded a timeout just as Covington Catholic’s Kurt Bovard nailed a three pointer which was nullified. The Colonels then missed five consecutive shots and Apollo took control of the game for the victory.
Apollo shot 56.4% from the field, including five of 13 from beyond the arc. The Eagles connected on eight of 16 free throws, pulled down 35 rebounds, and scored 10 points on only nine Covington Catholic turnovers. Covington Catholic shot 36.7% from the field, including only four of 21 from the three point line. The Colonels connected on five of six free throws, pulled down 26 rebounds, and scored 17 points off 23 Apollo turnovers.
Tyler Brown led Apollo with 20 points and eight rebounds. 6-3 Jr. Justin Little and Jake Wells added 12 and 11 points respectively. Todd Jacobs led Covington Catholic with 13 points. Danny Noll chipped in with nine points and nine rebounds.

Madison Central raced out to a 32-13 halftime lead on their way to an 81-44 victory over Hazard. Fifteen players saw action for Madison Central with twelve entering the scoring column. The Indians held a 38-7 advantage in bench scoring and scored 32 points off 20 Hazard turnovers.
Madison Central shot 47.5% from the field, including five of 14 from beyond the arc. The Indians connected on 18 of 23 free throws and pulled down 42 rebounds. Hazard shot 31% from the field, including four of 12 from the three point line. The Bulldogs connected on 14 of 22 free throws and grabbed 22 rebounds.
6-3 Jr. Chavez Dean led the victors with 14 points including two crowd-pleasing dunks and pulled down nine rebounds. Aaron Morris and Duane Fields added 14 and 12 points respectively. 6-1 Fr. Keshawn Simpson added eight points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Justin Hicks led Hazard with 12 points.

The Panthers connected on six of 12 from the free throw line and pulled down 27 rebounds. Boyle County shot 34.5% from the field, including zero of eight from from the three point line.
Troy Frazier, Vincent Crutcher, and Kerry Benson led Pleasure Ridge Park with 16, 15, and 13 points respectively. Brian Staed led Boyle County with 17 points, eight rebounds, and three blocked shots. Seth Tamme and Clay Carter added eight and seven points respectively.

Graves County coach Allan Hatcher countered with 6-2 Jr. Brett Wiggins, 6-0 Sr. Jamie King, 6-6 Sr. Randon Cravette, 6-2 Jr. Matt Kimbler, and 6-0 Sr. Zach Sims.
Graves County dethroned the defendeing state champions by defeating South Laurel 46-45 in an overtime thriller. Jamie King hit a layup off a Randon Cravette assist with 10 seconds left to give the Eagles a 46-45 lead. South Laurel missed two shots in the closing seconds as Graves County held on for the victory.
Graves County shot 52.8% from the field, connected on two of seven free throws, and pulled down 31 rebounds. South Laurel shot 37.8% from the field, including six of 14 from beyond the arc. The Cardinals connected on five of 10 free throws and pulled down 17 rebounds.
Randon Cravette led the victors with 19 points, 12 rebounds, and five assists. Jamie King added 16 points. Ty Proffitt and Trey Smith led South Laurel with 18 and 16 points respectively. Smith also blocked four shots. Proffitt scored all eight of South Laurel’s points in overtime.

The Chargers connected on 13 of 19 from the free throw line, and pulled down 30 rebounds. Jeffersontown scored 22 points off 17 Shelby County turnovers.
Shelby County shot shot 39.6% from the field, including five of 15 from beyond the arc. The Rockets connected on 11 of 16 free throws, and pulled down 28 rebounds. Shelby County scored 22 points off 20 Jeffersontown turnovers.
Ceedrick Ware led Jeffersontown with 21 points and seven rebounds. Thomas Coleman added 10 points, five rebounds, and five blocked shots. Nick Gagel chipped in with nine points. A. J. Slaughter led Shelby County with 28 points including four three point baskets. Slaughter also recorded seven steals. 6-8 Jr. Eugene Wade added nine points, seven rebounds, and three blocked shots.

Apollo used a combination of tempo, good defense, and a poor shooting night by Mason County to earn a 48-36 victory. Apollo shot 45.2% from the field, including five of 12 from the three point line. The Eagles connected on 15 of 19 free throws, and pulled down 24 rebounds. Mason County shot 40% from the field, including five of 17 from beyond the arc. The Royals connected on three of 11 free throws and grabbed 20 rebounds.
Tyler Brown led a balanced Apollo attack with 14 points. Doug Denton and Jake Wells added 13 and 11 points respectively. Brad Morris chipped in with seven points and 12 rebounds. Micah Turner led Mason County with 17 points and seven rebounds. Darius Miller added seven points.

Pleasure Ridge Park took advantage of cold shooting from the field by Madison Central (four of 22 in the first half) to earn a 58-45 victory. Pleasure Ridge Park led 34-13 early in the third quarter before Madison Central went on a 15-1 run to cut the deficit to seven, 35-28, with 2:30 remaining in the third quarter. The Panthers then went on a 10-0 run to lead 45-28 before Madison Central again rallied to pull within eight, 47-39, with 2:57 left in the game. The Indians could not get any closer as Pleasure Ridge held on for the victory.
Pleasure Ridge Park shot 40.8% from the field, connected on 15 of 26 free throws, and pulled down 41 rebounds. Madison Central shot 30.4% from the field, including only two of 16 from beyond the arc. The Indians connected on 15 of 25 free throws and grabbed 31 rebounds.
Vincent Crutcher led Pleasure Ridge Park with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Kerry Benson added 10 points. Adam Decker chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds. Andrew Mathis led Madison Central with 12 points. Aaron Morris added 11 points and nine rebounds. 6-1 Fr. Keshawn Simpson chipped in with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Graves County coach Allan Hatcher started the following lineup: 6-2 Jr. Brett Wiggins, 6-0 Sr. Jamie King, 6-6 Sr. Randon Cravette, 6-2 Jr. Matt Kimbler, and 6-0 Sr. Zach Sims. Jeffersontown coach Jeff Morrow countered with 6-1 Sr. Ceedrick Ware, 6-1 Sr. Dale Easley, 6-8 Jr. Thomas Coleman, 5-11 So. Nick Gagel, and 6-3 Jr. Rashad Basey.
Jeffersontown raced out to a 33-18 halftime lead on their way to a 54-43 victory over Graves County. Graves County trailed 17-15 with five and a half minutes remaining in the first half but Jeffersontown closed out the period with a 16-3 run. Graves County cut the deficit to five, 44-39, with 2:59 remaining in the game but could not get any closer.
Jeffersontown shot 45% from the field, connected on 16 of 25 free throws, and pulled down 32 rebounds. The Chargers scored 22 points off 18 Graves County turnovers. Graves County shot 37.2% from the field including only one of 10 from beyond the arc. The Eagles connected on 10 of 14 free throws, pulled down 24 rebounds and scored 15 points off 17 Jeffersontown turnovers.
Rashad Basey paced the victors with 20 points, six rebounds, and four steals. Ceedrick Ware added 13 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Randon Cravette led Graves County with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Zach Sims and Jamie King added 10 points each.

Pleasure Ridge Park coach Dale Mabrey started the following lineup: 6-1 Jr. Nick George, 6-4 Jr. Kerry Benson, 6-4 Sr. Vincent Crutcher, 6-1 Sr. Troy Frazier, and 6-0 So. Adam Decker. Apollo coach Tony Hopper countered with 6-1 Sr. Brad Morris, 6-2 So. Tyler Brown, 6-4 Jr. Ben Duvall, 6-0 Sr. Jake Wells, and 6-0 Sr. Doug Denton.
Apollo held on down the stretch to defeat Pleasure Ridge Park 57-53. Apollo trailed 35-33 with 2:36 remaining in the third quarter but went on a 9-0 run to lead 42-35 with 7:12 remaining in the game. Pleasure Ridge Park battled back and appeared to have cut the lead to one, 53-52, on a basket by Vincent Crutcher with 26 seconds on the clock. However, the basket was disallowed as Crutcher was whistled for a charging foul, his fifth of the game, and Apollo held on for the victory.
Apollo shot 55.6% from the field, including six of 14 from beyond the arc. The Eagles connected on 11 of 14 free throws, pulled down 22 rebounds, and scored 17 points off 16 Pleasure Ridge Park turnovers. Pleasure Ridge Park shot 42.9% from the field, including only one of nine from the three point line. The Panthers connected on 10 of 17 free throws, pulled down 24 rebounds, and scored 14 points off 19 Apollo turnovers.
Doug Denton led Apollo with 13 points including three three point field goals. Ben Duvall added 12 points. Vincent Crutcher led Pleasure Ridge Park with with 25 points and nine rebounds.

Jeffersontown utilized their inside strength to defeat Apollo 61-48 and claim the championship. Jeffersontown held a 40-20 advantage in rebounds and a 27-6 advantage in second chance points. The Chargers scored 23 points off 16 Apollo turnovers.
Jeffersontown shot 38.8% from the field and connected on 23 of 28 free throws. Apollo shot 34.1% from the field including five of 19 from beyond the arc. Apollo connected on 15 of 21 free throws.
Thomas Coleman led Jeffersontown with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocked shots. Coleman scored 12 points in the fourth quarter. Ceedrick Ware added 19 points and 11 rebounds. Rashad Basey chipped in with 10 points. Tyler Brown led Apollo with 22 points and seven rebounds. Doug Denton added 10 points.

Conclusion
Congratulations to Coach Jeff Morrow and the Jeffersontown Chargers for capturing the big prize. The Chargers finished 32-3 and survived a grueling five games in six days to claim the championship. They Chargers average victory margin was 12.3 ppg.
Also congratulations to Coach Tony Hopper and the Apollo Eagles. They assumed the Cinderella role and made it all the way to the championship game. Pleasure Ridge Park always makes for an exciting team and Dale Mabrey’s latest warrior Vincent Crutcher always leaves it all on the floor.
There are too many teams to mention them all here but I have a rather simplistic approach to the state tourney. Regardless of the outcome in any game here this week, there are absolutely no losers at this tourney. There will always be discussions of the teams that didn’t make it—the should-have-beens, would-have-beens, could-have-beens. However, 16 teams descended upon Rupp Arena for this special week and event that ultimately crowns the championship of Kentucky High School Hoops.
