Henry Clay (9-7) at Sayre (12-3)

Henry Clay coach Daniel Brown started the following lineup:  6-5 Jr. Aaron Boyd, 5-11 So. Prince Stewart, 6-6 Jr. Victor Moses, 5-8 Jr. Brian Nichols, and 5-11 Fr. Ge-Lawn Guyn.  Sayre coach Gene Kirk countered with 6-1 Sr. Eric Bunning, 6-2 Sr. Trae Cunningham, 6-6 Sr. Alex Lloyd, 5-10 Jr. Lee Hagin, and 5-7 Sr. Dee Smith.

Sayre’s Dee Smith hit a putback at the buzzer in the second overtime to give the Spartans a dramatic 75-73 victory over Henry Clay.  This was an excellent victory for Sayre over one of the Lexington public schools.  Henry Clay led 35-28 at halftime and increased the lead to nine, 37-28, before Sayre rallied to edge ahead 47-36 at the end of the third quarter.  The lead changed hands several times in the final quarter before Sayre’s Trae Cunningham tied the score at 62-62 in the closing seconds.  The first overtime ended in a 68-68 tie as Henry Clay misfired on a field goal attempt in the final two seconds.

Sayre took a 73-70 lead in overtime but Henry Clay’s Ge-Lawn Guyn nailed a three point field goal at 2:48 to knot the score at 73-73.  Neither team could find the range in the closing minutes until Dee Smith hit his game winner at the buzzer.

Sayre shot 44.3% from the field including five of 14 from the three point line.  The Spartans connected on 16 of 22 free throws, pulled down 44 rebounds, and scored 10 points off 18 Henry Clay turnovers.  Henry Clay shot 37.2% from the field including nine of 20 from beyond the arc.  The Blue Devils connected on only six of 26 free throws, grabbed 52 rebounds, and scored 31 points off 21 Sayre turnovers.

Dee Smith and Trae Cunningham led the victors with 24 points each.  Cunningham and Smith pulled down seven and six rebounds respectively.  Alex Lloyd added 11 points, eight rebounds, and four blocked shots.

Aaron Boyd led Henry Clay with 21 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists.  Victor Moses added 18 points and 12 rebounds.  Ge-Lawn Guyn chipped in with 15 points including four three point baskets and eight rebounds.
