Lexington Catholic athletic director Andy Listerman and head coach Brandon Salsman have put together another excellent event. Eleven of the top twenty-five teams in the Lexington Herald-Leader pre-season preview are scheduled to participate in this event. They are #6 Mason County, #8 Lexington Catholic, #9 Doss, #11 Male, #13 Covington Catholic, #16 Apollo, #18 Henry Clay, #19 Clark County, #21 Holmes, #22 Simon Kenton, and #25 Russell.
Several of the top players in the state are scheduled to play in this star-studded event. Ten of the top twenty-five players in the Lexington Herald-Leader pre-season preview are featured in this tournament. The players are #3 Darius Miller (Mason County), #4 Jeff Brooks (Doss), #11 Preston Knowles (Clark County), #12 Jonathan VanHoose (Russell), #15 Tyler Brown (Apollo), #16 Douglas Beaumont (Male), #18 Victor Moses (Henry Clay), #21 Davin Anderson (Doss), #24 Clark Stepp (June Buchanan), and #25 Austin Hill (Holmes).
The Lexington Herald-Leader preview also listed the best players in each region, and the number one player in six of the 16 regions is scheduled to play in this tournament. The regionally ranked number one players in this event are Tyler Brown (Region 3), Jeff Brooks (Region 6), Mike Hester (Simon Kenton) (Region 8), Austin Hill (Region 9), Darius Miller (Region 10), and Jonathan VanHoose (Region 16).

December 26th - Day 1
Bourbon County (1-4) vs. Doss (6-2)
Bourbon County coach Mike Flynn started the following lineup: 6-2 Sr. Brandon Coons, 6-3 Jr. Christian Graham, 6-2 So. Adam Lynch, 5-10 Jr. Jeff Dailey, and 5-11 So. Maurice Hogue. Doss coach Shawn Purlee countered with 6-8 Sr. Jeff Brooks, 6-3 So. Cameron Clemons, 6-6 Sr. Tony Brown, 6-2 Jr. Dominique Denning, and 6-1 Sr. Davin Anderson.
Doss raced out to a 44-17 halftime lead on their way to a decisive 70-33 victory over Bourbon County. Davin Anderson led a balanced Doss attack with 15 points and five steals. Jeff Brooks added 12 points, six rebounds, and five steals. Dominique Denning also reached double figures with 11 points. 5-10 Sr. Dionte Mucker came off the bench to record nine points.
5-10 Jr. Matt Wigglesworth came off the bench to lead Bourbon County with eight points. Maurice Hogue added seven points. Christian Graham, 5-9 Jr. Jacob Drury, and 6-5 So. Matt Kenney each recorded four points.

June Buchanan coach Gary Stepp countered with 6-6 Jr. Trey Short, 6-4 So. Brent Hall, 6-10 So. Garrison Collins, 6-0 Fr. Tate Cox, and 6-4 Jr. Clark Stepp.
June Buchanan led 38-36 at halftime and pulled away in the second half to defeat Pendleton County 76-65. Trey Short and Tate Cox paced the victors with 18 points each. Clark Stepp, Garrison Collins, and 6-0 Fr. Clint Stepp added 14, 10, and 10 points respectively.
Kane Belcher and 5-11 Jr. Richard Harden led Pendleton County with 15 points each. Doug Lambert added 12 points. Abe Crozier and Jeremy Mudd each recorded eight points.

Male led 32-27 at halftime and continued to increase the margin in the second half to in a 63-44 victory over St. Mary. Doug Beaumont led Male with 21 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. Kris Carree added 12 points.
Johnothan Roof led St. Mary with 14 points. Gabriel Shaw added seven points. Wes Overstreet, Johnathan Byrd, and Justin Colgan each recorded six points.

Holmes held on down the stretch to eke out a hard-earned 65-61 victory over Johnson Central. Greg Rice and Austin Hill led the victors with 27 and 24 points respectively. Arrez Henderson also reached double figures with 10 points. 6-3 Sr. Jamie McCarty came off the bench to lead Johnson Central with 20 points including four three point baskets. Ian Welch added 18 points.

DeSales led 43-42 at the end of three quarters and pulled away in the final quarter to defeat Lincoln County 69-60. James Melloan led the victors with 19 points. Aaron Tandy added 15 points including 13 points in the final quarter. Jeff Mullaney chipped in with 11 points. Chase Overstreet and Ryan Young led Lincoln County with 22 and 20 points respectively.

Russell outscored Central 20-9 in the third quarter on their way to a 57-41 victory. Russell shot 46.7% from the floor including six of 15 from the three point line. The Red Devils connected on nine of 17 free throws, pulled down 44 rebounds, and committed 27 turnovers. Louisville Central shot 20% from the field including only three of 30 from beyond the arc. The Yellowjackets connected on 12 of 15 free throws, pulled down 39 rebounds, and committed 20 turnovers.
Jonathan VanHoose led Russell with 25 points including five three point baskets, pulled down eight rebounds, and dished out five assists. Scott Gill added 15 points and eight rebounds. Austin Robinson chipped in with 12 points and six rebounds.
Paul Bunton led Louisville Central with 11 points and six rebounds. Leland Banks and Randy Skeens added eight and seven points respectively.

Henry Clay trailed 42-39 entering the final quarter but rallied to defeat Simon Kenton 60-53. Simon Kenton led 51-47 with 3:50 left in the game but Henry Clay went on an 11-0 run to take a 58-51 lead and control of the game.
Henry Clay shot 46.2% from the field including two of five from the three point line. The Blue Devils connected on 10 of 16 free throws, pulled down 41 rebounds, and scored nine points off 12 Simon Kenton turnovers. Simon Kenton shot 37.1% from the field including three of 14 from beyond the arc. The Pioneers connected on four of four free throws, grabbed 28 rebounds, and scored 14 points off 18 Henry Clay turnovers.
Chase Minnifield led Henry Clay with 20 points and seven rebounds. Aaron Boyd added 14 points and 10 rebounds. Victor Moses chipped in with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
Zach Layne led Simon Kenton with 14 points. Mike Hester added 10 points and four assists. Josh Elbert recorded six points, 10 rebounds, and five assists.

Johnson Central shot 26.1% from the field including five of 24 from beyond the arc. The Golden Eagles connected on 13 of 15 free throws and grabbed 31 rebounds.
Justin Vitatoe led the victors with 18 points and eight rebounds. John Papineau added 11 points and 10 rebounds. Sean Parrish chipped in with nine points, nine assists, and five steals.

Lincoln County raced out to a 31-10 first quarter lead on their way to an 89-69 victory over Pendleton County. Lincoln County nailed 10 three point baskets for the game.
The victors were led today by Daniel Ralston with 24 points including six three point field goals. Noah Keeton added 21 points including three baskets from beyond the arc. Ryan Young, Chase Overstreet, and Braxston Miller added 13, 12, and 10 points respectively.
Kane Belcher led Pendleton County with 25 points. Kyle Feeback added 12 points on four three point baskets. Abe Crozier recorded 10 points.

Covington Catholic held a 57-41 lead in the fourth quarter but had to survive a furious rally by Doss to earn a 68-63 victory. Doss cut the lead to two, 61-59, late in the game but Covington Catholic held on for the victory.
The victors shot 54.2% from the field including four of 11 from the three point line. Covington Catholic connected on 12 of 18 free throws, pulled down 31 rebounds, and scored 20 points off 13 Doss turnovers. Doss shot 39.3% from the field including two of five from beyond the arc. The Dragons connected on 17 of 23 free throws, grabbed 35 rebounds, and scored 15 points off 19 Covington Catholic turnovers.
Todd Jacobs led Covington Catholic with 17 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. Aaron Noll and Michael Grimes added 14 and 13 points respectively.
Jeff Brooks led Doss with 24 points and eight rebounds. Davin Anderson added 13 points, four rebounds, and eight assists.

Trinity coach Michael Szabo countered with 6-5 Jr. Sam Robey, 6-1 Jr. Aaron Tierney, 6-7 Sr. Tanner Jacobs, 6-0 Sr. Brett Berry, and 6-1 Jr. Matt Chambless.
Henry Clay defeated Trinity 76-64 in overtime. The victorious Blue Devils scored the first seven points in the extra period to take control of the game. Henry Clay trailed by seven points, 52-45, in the fourth quarter but rallied to take a 60-57 lead in the closing minutes of the quarter. Trinity’s Aaron Tierney hit a late three point basket to force overtime.
Henry Clay shot 44.4% from the field including eight of 11 from the three point line. The Blue Devils connected on 28 of 38 free throws, pulled down 33 rebounds, and scored 16 points off 11 Trinity turnovers. Trinity shot 41.3% from the field including five of 16 from beyond the arc. Mason County led 49-46 after three quarters and pulled away in the final quarter to defeat Henry Clay 75-65. Mason County sizzled from the three point line as they connected on 12 of 23 for the game. Henry Clay suffered a blow when Chase Minnifield, who had scored eight points midway through the first quarter, went down with a knee injury and could not return.
Mason County shot 43.6% from the field, connected on 15 of 19 free throws, pulled down 29 rebounds, and scored 17 points off 14 Henry Clay turnovers. The Royals held a 36-9 advantage in three point points. Henry Clay shot 49.1% from the field including only three of 17 from beyond the arc. The Blue Devils connected on 10 of 17 free throws, grabbed 36 rebounds, and scored 16 points off 10 Mason County turnovers.
Darius Miller led Mason County with 24 points, nine rebounds, and five assists. Russ Middleton added 22 points including five three point baskets and pulled down eight rebounds. Tyreese Scott and Trevor Setty added 12 and 10 points respectively.
Aaron Boyd led Henry Clay with 21 points and five rebounds. Travis Bowman added 17 points, all in the second half. Victor Moses chipped in with 15 points and 17 rebounds.

The Colonels connected on nine of 11 free throws, pulled down 33 rebounds, and scored 13 points off 12 Holmes turnovers. Holmes shot 34.9% from the field including two of five from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs connected on nine of 10 free throws and grabbed 31 rebounds.
Todd Jacobs led Covington Catholic with 10 points, five rebounds, and six assists. Michael Grimes and 6-2 So. Luke Maile each scored nine points and pulled down six and five rebounds respectively.
Greg Rice led Holmes with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Austin Hill added 11 points and Arrez Henderson chipped in with seven points and five rebounds.

Lexington Catholic led 51-40 at the end of three quarters but had to withstand a Mason County rally in the fourth quarter to earn a 64-59 victory. Mason County tied the game at 59-59 but Lexington Catholic’s Nathan Novosel hit a field goal to give the Knights a 61-59 lead and they hit their free throws down the stretch to ensure the victory.
Lexington Catholic shot 47.1% from the field including four of 15 from the three point line. The Knights connected on 12 of 18 free throws, pulled down 33 rebounds, and scored 16 points off 16 Mason County turnovers. Mason County shot 41.2% from the field including six of 19 from beyond the arc. The Royals connected on 11 of 14 free throws, grabbed 27 rebounds, and scored 13 points off 15 Lexington Catholic turnovers.
Nathan Novosel led Lexington Catholic with 28 points and eight rebounds. Novosel was 10 of 14 from the field and eight of 10 from the free throw line. Jordan Smart added 18 points including four three point baskets. Taylor Stewart chipped in with 12 points and six rebounds.
Darius Miller led Mason County with 26 points including 21 points in the second half and pulled down seven rebounds. Tyreese Scott and Trevor Setty added eight points each.

Male played an almost flawless game in a 73-55 victory over Clark County tonight. Male led 57-38 late in the third quarter but Clark County rallied to cut the lead to seven, 59-52, in the final quarter. However, Male had another run left and outscored Clark County 14-3 in the closing minutes to close out a 73-55 victory.
Male shot 55% from the field including seven of 20 from the three point line. The Bulldogs connected on 10 of 15 free throws, pulled down 22 rebounds, and only committed six turnovers and two personal fouls. Clark County shot 50% from the field including seven of 17 from beyond the arc. The Cardinals did not attempt a free throw, grabbed 26 rebounds, and committed 16 turnovers.
Doug Beaumont led Male with 30 points including six three point baskets. Dexter Heyman and Kris Carree added 12 and 11 points respectively.
Preston Knowles led Clark County with 25 points including five three point baskets. 6-2 8th grader Robbie Stenzel added 11 points.

Championship Game
Male (11-2) vs. Lexington Catholic (11-2) Championship

Male continued their sterling play this week with a 66-49 championship game victory over Lexington Catholic. The Knights trailed by four, 39-35, midway through the third quarter but Male pulled away for a decisive victory. Lexington Catholic was hampered tonight by the absence of 6-3 Sr. Zach Newton, who was out with the flu.
Male shot 40.7% from the field including six of 21 from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs connected on 12 of 23 free throws, pulled down 39 rebounds, and scored 28 points off 23 Lexington Catholic turnovers. Male also held a 15-6 advantage on second chance points and a 20-10 advantage in bench scoring.
Lexington Catholic shot 38.3% from the field including six of 15 from the three point line. The Knights connected on seven of nine free throws, pulled down 33 rebounds, and scored 13 points off 11 Male turnovers.
Doug Beaumont led Male with 20 points, five rebounds, and five steals. Dexter Heyman added 18 points and 14 rebounds. 6-0 Sr. Wes Miller chipped in with 14 points including four three point baskets.
Taylor Stewart led Lexington Catholic with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Nathan Novosel and Taylor Botkin added 10 points each.

Conclusion
Congratulations to Lexington Catholic athletic director Andy Listerman, Coach Brandon Salsman, and all the sponsors for putting together an excellent tournament. Congratulations to Male for capturing the championship over an excellent field. There were some excellent teams and individual performers on display this week.
