The All “A” Classic started in 1980 with eight teams and in 1990 became a true statewide championship with 16 boys regional tournament winners competing for the championship.  Champions crowned to date are 1980 Covington Holy Cross, 1981 Bellevue, 1982 Carlisle County, 1983 Walton-Verona, 1984 Oneida Baptist, 1985 Harlan, 1986 Muhlenberg Central, 1987 Covington Holy Cross, 1988 Bardstown, 1989 Central City, 1990 University Heights, 1991 University Heights, 1992 Lexington Catholic, 1993 Dilce Combs, 1994 Harlan, 1995 Harlan, 1996 University Heights, 1997 Lexington Catholic, 1998 University Heights, 1999 University Heights, 2000 Newport Central Catholic, 2001 Glasgow, 2002 University Heights, 2003 St. Henry, 2004 Hazard, 2005 University Heights, 2006 Bardstown, 2007 Bishop Brossart, 2008 University Heights, 2009 Shelby Valley, 2010 Shelby Valley, 2011 Betsy Layne, and 2012 Covington Holy Cross.

Bardstown  (Region 5)  vs.  Carlisle County  (Region 1)

 

Bardstown coach James Brewer started the following lineup: 6-6 Sr. Devonte Grundy, 6-2 Sr. Marcus Cosby, 6-7 Jr. Sevion Schooling, 5-8 Jr. Tavon Johnson, and 5-7 Sr. Dee Yocum.  Carlisle County coach Brian O’Neill countered with 6-3 Sr. Tanner Guhy, 6-3 Sr. Derik Elliott, 6-9 Sr. Marcus Burnett, 5-10 Sr. Cody Rowe, and 5-10 Fr. Ethan Weatherspoon.

 

Bardstown pulled away in the final quarter to defeat Carlisle County by a score of 61-46.  Bardstown shot 38.3% from the field including five of 16 from the three point line.  The Tigers connected on 10 of 13 free throws, pulled down 38 rebounds, and scored 16 points off 20 Carlisle County.  Carlisle County shot 40.8% from the field including three of 13 from beyond the arc.  The Comets connected on three of four free throws, pulled down 29 rebounds, and scored 13 points off 13 Bardstown turnovers.

 

Devonte Grundy led Bardstown with 21 points and 11 rebounds.  5-9 So. Eljay Cowherd added 13 points and four assists.  Marcus Cosby chipped in with nine points and five rebounds.  Sevion Schooling recorded six points, nine rebounds, and three blocked shots.

 

Marcus Burnett led Carlisle County with 13 points and 12 rebounds.  Tanner Guhy added 12 points including two three point baskets.  Ethan Weatherspoon chipped in with 10 points.

Hammons.

 

Model defeated University Heights by a score of 68-56.  Model shot 53.3% from the field including eight of 15 from the three point line.  The Patriots connected on 12 of 15 free throws, pulled down 30 rebounds, and scored 13 points off 13 University Heights turnovers.  University Heights shot 38% from the field including five of 21 from beyond the arc.  The Blazers connected on 13 of 23 free throws, pulled down 29 rebounds, and scored 10 points off 16 Model turnovers.

 

Jon Ballard led Model with 20 points and seven rebounds.  Ballard was nine of 12 from the field and two of two from the free throw line.  A.J. Hammons added 12 points including two three point baskets and six rebounds.  Anthony Gerald chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds.  6-0 Sr. Jesse Middleton recorded 10 points including two three point baskets.

 

Austin Bynum led University Heights with 17 points including two three point baskets.  Lamontas Johnson added 11 points including two three point baskets.  6-1 So. Ledonald Gray chipped in with nine points.  Thomas Folz recorded eight points, six rebounds, and three blocked shots.

Russell coach Merle Kidwell started the following lineup: 6-2 Jr. Steven Estep, 6-1 Sr. Jacob Porter, 6-5 Sr. Lance Evans, 5-6 Sr. Googie Hayes, and 6-2 Sr. Kyle Skaggs.  Butler County coach Calvin Dockery countered with 6-4 Sr. Alex Hall, 6-3 Jr. Zeke Woodcock, 6-6 Jr. Trevor Jenkins, 5-10 Sr. Brandon Thomas, and 6-0 Sr. Elijah Fleener.

 

Russell avoided an upset by a very determined Butler County squad to earn a 69-68 victory. Russell led 55-44 after three quarters but had to survive a Butler County rally.  Russell shot 48.8% from the field including six of 14 from the three point line.  The Red Devils connected on 21 of 34 free throws, pulled down 27 rebounds, and scored 15 points off 11 Butler County turnovers.  Butler County shot 41.4% from the field including five of 19 from beyond the arc.  The Bears connected on 15 of 25 free throws, pulled down 42 rebounds, and scored 15 points off 11 Russell turnovers.  Butler County held a 16-0 advantage in second effort points.

 

Kyle Skaggs led Russell with 33 points including four three point baskets and five rebounds.  Jacob Porter added 19 points.  Porter was six of seven from the field including one of two from beyond the arc, and six of seven from the free throw line.  Lance Evans chipped in with 10 points.  Googie Hayes recorded seven points, seven assists, and five steals.

 

5-8 So. Zach Burden led Butler County with 23 points and five rebounds.  Zeke Woodcock added 14 points including two three point baskets.  Elijah Fleener chipped in with 11 points.  Alex Hall recorded six points and 15 rebounds.

Bishop Brossart defeated Louisville Collegiate by a score of 54-49.  Bishop Brossart shot 46.7% from the field including two of six from the three point line.  The Mustangs connected on 10 of 16 free throws, pulled down 24 rebounds, and scored 12 points off 19 Louisville Collegiate turnovers.  Louisville Collegiate shot 45% from the field including two of 14 from beyond the arc.  The Titans connected on 11 of 19 free throws, pulled down 23 rebounds, and scored 10 points off 16 Bishop Brossart turnovers.

 

Justin Saunders led Bishop Brossart with 18 points.  Alex Trentman added 10 points and 11 rebounds.  Drew Burns chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds. 

 

Bryce Overstreet led Louisville Collegiate with 17 points and six rebounds.  David Keyer added 10 points.  Andrew Steggeman chipped in with nine points.

Holy Cross defeated Pikeville by a score of 65-60.  Holy Cross shot 41.3% from the field including eight of 15 from the three point line.  The Cougars connected on 19 of 30 free throws, pulled down 31 rebounds, and scored 17 points off 13 Pikeville turnovers.  Holy Cross held a 19-2 advantage in free throw points and a 24-12 advantage in three point points.  Pikeville shot 55.1% from the field including four of 11 from beyond the arc.  The Panthers connected on two of seven free throws, pulled down 26 rebounds, and scored eight points off seven Holy Cross turnovers.  Pikeville held a 44-20 advantage on points in the paint.

 

Dominique Mack led Holy Cross with 24 points including two three point baskets, 10 rebounds, three assists, and three steals.  Jack Schmitt added 23 points including four three point baskets, and five rebounds.

 

Ray Kasongo led Pikeville with 32 points, 14 rebounds, and five blocked shots.  Kasongo was 15 of 17 from the field and two of seven from the free throw line.  Ethan Rowe added 19 points including three three point baskets and four assists.

Newport Central Catholic trailed 20-19 at halftime but rallied to defeat Somerset by a score of 47-33.  Newport Central Catholic shot 37% from the field including zero of four from the three point line.  The Thoroughbreds connected on 13 of 17 free throws, pulled down 33 rebounds, and scored 17 points off 16 Somerset turnovers.  Somerset shot 25.6% from the field including one of six from beyond the arc.  The Briar Jumpers connected on 10 of 13 free throws, pulled down 30 rebounds, and scored six points off 12 Newport Central Catholic turnovers.

 

Drew McDonald led Newport Central Catholic with 19 points and eight rebounds.  McDonald was eight of 12 from the field and three of three from the free throw line.  Jake Schulte added 13 points, 10 rebounds, five blocked shots, and three steals.  Michael Bueter chipped in with 11 points, six rebounds, and four steals.

 

Ryan Dishman led Somerset with 11 points.  Tyson Williams added 10 points and 12 rebounds.  Matt Gordon also recorded 10 points.  Gordon was four of five from the field and two of two from the free throw line.  Ryan Weddle recorded two points, six rebounds, and six blocked shots.

Simon Christon led Knott County Central with 14 points and seven rebounds.  Christon was six of seven from the field including one of two from beyond the arc, and one of three from the free throw line.  Evan Hall added 13 points and nine rebounds.  Camron Justice chipped in with 12 points.

 

Joe Davis led Clinton County with 11 points including two three point baskets.  Keifer Dalton added eight points and eight rebounds.  Colby Langford chipped in with seven points.

Carson Williams led a balanced Owen County attack with 10 points, 12 rebounds, and four blocked shots.  Hunter Trenary added nine points.  Tucker Trenary chipped in with eight points  and Zach Ripy added seven points and four assists.  Justin Shelton recorded six points and eight rebounds.

Bardstown defeated Model by a score of 80-63.  Bardstown shot 47.8% from the field including seven of 21 from the three point line.  The Tigers connected on nine of 12 free throws, pulled down 38 rebounds, and scored 23 points off 20 Model turnovers.  Bardstown attempted 20 more shots (67-47) from the field than Model.  Model shot 46.8% from the field including six of 15 from beyond the arc.  The Patriots connected on 13 of 23 free throws, pulled down 25 rebounds, and scored 12 points off 16 Bardstown turnovers.

 

Devonte Grundy led Bardstown with 31 points including three three point baskets, 12 rebounds, and three assists.  Marcus Cosby added 18 points including three three point baskets.  5-6 So. Keanu Young chipped in with 10 points.  Dee Yocum added nine points and Sevion Schooling recorded six points and 10 rebounds.

 

Jon Ballard led Model with 27 points and six rebounds.  Ballard was 11 of 14 from the field and five of eight from the free throw line.  Zack Rice-Gordon added 17 points including three three point baskets, five rebounds, and three assists.  Rice-Gordon was seven of 10 from the field including three of five from the three point line, and zero of two from the free throw line.

Drew Burns led Bishop Brossart with 16 points and six rebounds.  Burns was seven of nine from the field and two of four from the free throw line.  Alex Trentman added 15 points and seven rebounds.  Ben Uebel recorded 12 points on four three point baskets and pulled down seven rebounds.  Justin Saunders chipped in with 11 points.

Camron Justice led Knott County Central with 25 points, six rebounds, and six steals.  Evan Hall added 22 points and nine rebounds.  Hall was 10 of 12 from the field and two of three from the free throw line.

 

Carson Williams led Owen County with 19 points, five rebounds, and three steals.  Williams was eight of 11 from the field and three of seven from the free throw line.  Zach Ripy added 13 points including three three point baskets and four assists.  Justin Shelton recorded six points, eight rebounds, and five blocked shots.

Bardstown led 41-28 early in the final quarter and held on down the stretch for a 58-50 victory over Bishop Brossart.  Bishop Brossart cut the deficit to three; 51-48 late in the game but Bardstown finished the game on a 7-2 run.  Free throws were Bishop Brossart’s achilles’ heel as they were only eight of 25 from the free throw line.  Bardstown shot 48.9% from the field including six of 14 from the three point line.  The Tigers connected on six of 13 free throws, pulled down 33 rebounds, and scored 11 points off 10 Bishop Brossart turnovers.  Bishop Brossart shot 44.4% from the field including two of five from beyond the arc.  The Mustangs connected on eight of 25 free throws, pulled down 25 rebounds, and scored 11 points off 16 Bardstown turnovers.

 

Devonte Grundy led Bardstown with 26 points including three three point baskets and 10 rebounds.  Marcus Cosby added 17 points including two three point baskets.

 

Justin Saunders led Bishop Brossart with 19 points and 11 rebounds.  Ben Uebel added 10 points and three steals.  Drew Burns recorded nine points and six rebounds.

Newport Central Catholic defeated Knott County Central by a score of 49-44.  Michael Bueter scored the last nine Newport Central Catholic points and Nick Seibert hounded Knott County Central star Camron Justice on defense.  Justice scored 20 points but he was only one of eight from the three point line.  Newport Central Catholic shot 46.5% from the field including four of 13 from the three point line.  The Thoroughbreds connected on five of 11 free throws, pulled down 24 rebounds, and scored 20 points off 16 Knott County Central turnovers.  Knott County Central shot 37.5% from the field including four of 16 from beyond the arc.  The Patriots connected on 10 of 13 free throws, pulled down 28 rebounds, and scored eight points off 10 Newport Central Catholic turnovers.

 

Michael Bueter led Newport Central Catholic with 21 points including three three point baskets and three steals.  Jake Schulte added 12 points and eight rebounds.

 

Camron Justice led Knott County Central with 20 points and five rebounds.  Chance Cornett added 12 points and nine rebounds.  Simon Christon chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds.

Newport Central Catholic blistered the nets for 81.3% (13-16) from the field and 81% (17-21) from the free throw line in the second half as the Thoroughbreds pulled away to defeat Bardstown by a score of 75-54.  Newport Central Catholic shot 59.5% from the field including four of eight from the free throw line.  The Thoroughbreds connected on 21 of 25 free throws, pulled down 26 rebounds, and scored 17 points off nine Bardstown turnovers.  Bardstown shot 31.7% from the field including five of 18 from beyond the arc.  The Tigers connected on 11 of 12 free throws, pulled down 35 rebounds, and scored 11 points off seven Newport Central Catholic turnovers.  The Tigers attempted 18 more shots (60-42) from the field than Newport Central Catholic.

 

Drew McDonald led Newport Central Catholic with 21 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists.  Michael Bueter also scored 21 points and dished out four assists.  Jake Schulte chipped in with 12 points and eight rebounds.  Nick Seibert recorded 11 points, three assists, and three steals.

 

5-9 So. Eljay Cowherd led Bardstown with 21 points including three three point baskets, three rebounds, and three assists.  Devonte Grundy added 14 points and 12 rebounds.  Sevion Schooling pulled down eight rebounds and blocked three shots.
