The All “A” Classic started in 1980 with eight teams and became a true statewide championship with 16 boys regional tournament winners competing for the championship.  Champions crowned to date are 1980 Covington Holy Cross, 1981 Bellevue, 1982 Carlisle County, 1983 Walton-Verona, 1984 Oneida Baptist, 1985 Harlan, 1986 Muhlenberg Central, 1987 Covington Holy Cross, 1988 Bardstown, 1989 Central City, 1990 University Heights, 1991 University Heights, 1992 Lexington Catholic, 1993 Dilce Combs, 1994 Harlan, 1995 Harlan, 1996 University Heights, 1997 Lexington Catholic, 1998 University Heights, 1999 University Heights, 2000 Newport Central Catholic, 2001 Glasgow, 2002 University Heights, 2003 St. Henry, 2004 Hazard, 2005 University Heights, 2006 Bardstown, 2007 Bishop Brossart, 2008 University Heights, 2009 Shelby Valley, 2010 Shelby Valley, 2011 Betsy Layne, 2012 Covington Holy Cross, and 2013 Newport Central Catholic.

Elliott County (Region 16)  vs.  Lexington Christian Academy (Region 11)

 

Elliott County coach Greg Adkins started the following lineup: 6-3 Jr. Hunter Holbrook, 6-0 Sr. Logan Nickell, 6-5 So. Collin Howell, 5-7 So. Reece Griffith, and 5-7 So. Landon Griffith.  Lexington Christian Academy Brad Carter countered with 6-6 Jr. Matt Rose, 6-7 Jr. Drew Trimble, 6-5 Sr. Michael Young, 5-10 Jr. John Stein, and 6-2 So. Trevor Hill.

 

Lexington Christian Academy raced out to a 19-8 first quarter lead on their way to a 62-47 victory over Elliott County.  LCA shot 45.8% from the field including six of 18 from the three point line.  The Eagles connected on 12 of 21 free throws, pulled down 33 rebounds, and scored 21 points off 18 Elliott County.  Elliott County shot 36.6% from the field including five of 14 from beyond the arc.  The Lions connected on 12 of 20 free throws, pulled down 27 rebounds, and scored 12 points off 13 LCA turnovers.

 

Michael Young led LCA with 13 points and eight rebounds.  Drew Trimble added 12 points, six rebounds, two blocked shots, and four steals.  Trevor Hill and 6-5 Jr. Benton Nighbert each scored nine points.

 

Logan Nickell led Elliott County with 11 points including two three point baskets.  Colin Howell added seven points and six rebounds.  Hunter Holbrook chipped in with six points and five rebounds.

Louisville Holy Cross defeated University Heights by a score of 68-55.  Louisville Holy Cross shot 53.5% from the field including two of four from the three point line.  The Cougars connected on 20 of 25 free throws, pulled down 28 rebounds, and scored 17 points off 12 University Heights turnovers.  University Heights shot 47.7% from the field including seven of 15 from beyond the arc.  The Blazers connected on six of eight free throws, pulled down 16 rebounds, and scored 10 points off 10 Louisville Holy Cross turnovers.

 

Dominique Mack led Louisville Holy Cross with 22 points.  Jack Schmitt added 21 points including eight of eight free throws.  Ryan Nalley recorded nine points and nine rebounds.  Norman Ellis chipped in with eight points.  Aaron Stahl added six points and six rebounds.

 

Lamontas Johnson led University Heights with 15 points including three three point baskets.   Dashjon Brown and 6-4 Fr. Jaylen Sebree added eight and seven points respectively.

Green County defeated Kentucky Country Day by a score of 69-66.  There were 12 lead changes and 10 ties in this game.  Green County shot 57.1% from the field including six of 11 from the three point line.  The Dragons connected on 15 of 26 free throws, pulled down 32 rebounds, and scored 13 points off 11 Kentucky Country Day turnovers.  Kentucky Country Day shot 48.1% from the field including five of 17 from beyond the arc.  The Bearcats connected on 11 of 22 free throws, pulled down 24 rebounds, and scored 19 points off 16 Green County turnovers.

 

Dominique Compton led Green County with 21 points.  Colton Bush added 12 points and five rebounds.  Jayden Willis chipped in with 11 points.  5-8 Sr. Kenneth Banks recorded 10 points and eight rebounds.

Zach Pangallo led Newport Central Catholic with 19 points including three three point baskets, and six rebounds.  Drew McDonald added 12 points, six rebounds, and two blocked shots.  Tanner Moeves chipped in with 10 points including two three point baskets.  Jake Schulte recorded eight points and seven rebounds.

Dylan Meade led Betsy Layne with 17 points including two three point baskets.  Peyton Case added 13 points, five rebounds, and seven assists.  Dustin Rogers chipped in with 11 points, six rebounds, and three steals.  Dylan Hamilton recorded six points, 13 rebounds, and four steals.

Somerset led Jackson County 33-20 early in the third quarter but Jackson County outscored Somerset 28-15 in the final quarter to earn a 65-61 victory.  Jackson County shot 50% from the field including two of 13 from the three point line.  The Generals connected on 17 of 22 free throws, pulled down 35 rebounds, and scored four points off five Somerset turnovers.  Somerset shot 41.5% from the field including eight of 18 from beyond the arc.  The Briar Jumpers connected on nine of 12 free throws, pulled down 21 rebounds, and scored 10 points off 10 Jackson County turnovers.  Somerset held a 20-0 advantage in bench points.

 

Jordan Fox led Jackson County with 28 points including two three point baskets, five rebounds, and three assists.  Zach Lawson added 14 points and five rebounds.  Jacob Hammonds chipped in with 12 points and seven rebounds.  Isaiah Collier recorded 11 points, 14 rebounds, and four blocked shots.

Christen Cunningham led Cordia with 17 points, four rebounds, and seven assists.  6-8 Sr. Fritz Lucien added 14 points, 12 rebounds, and two steals.  Anthony Tagaloa chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds.

Wes Averill hit a buzzer beater field goal to give St. Mary a 38-36 victory over Bishop Brossart.  St. Mary led 21-13 at halftime but Bishop Brossart rallied to lead 35-31 lead.  However, St. Mary rallied for the victory.  Bishop Brossart only managed to connect on six of 17 (35.3%) from the free throw line.  There were three lead changes and five ties in this game.

 

St. Mary shot 32.4% from the field including five of 18 from the three point line.  The Vikings connected on nine of 12 free throws. Pulled down 21 rebounds, and scored 15 points off 12 Bishop Brossart turnovers.  Bishop Brossart shot 46.4% from the field including four of eight from beyond the arc.  The Mustangs connected on six of 17 free throws, pulled down 26 rebounds, and scored eight points off seven St. Mary turnovers.

 

Patrick Hubert led St. Mary with 13 points and three assists.  Harrison Dickens added eight points.  Wes Averill recorded seven points and seven rebounds.  Tyler Dome also scored seven points.

Drew Trimble hit a layup with five seconds remaining on the clock to give Lexington Christian Academy a 59-58 victory over Louisville Holy Cross.  Louisville Holy Cross led 52-44 with five minutes left in the game but Lexington Christian Academy rallied for the victory. There were 12 lead changes and six ties in this game.  Lexington Christian Academy shot 50% from the field including five of 15 from the three point line.  The Eagles connected on 12 of 16 free throws, pulled down 25 rebounds, and scored 14 points off 10 Louisville Holy Cross turnovers.  Louisville Holy Cross shot 35.4% from the field including five of 13 from beyond the arc.  The Cougars connected on 19 of 26 free throws, pulled down 33 rebounds, and scored 23 points off 14 Lexington Christian Academy turnovers.

 

Matt Rose led LCA with 22 points, six rebounds, and five blocked shots.  Drew Trimble added 16 points including two three point baskets and five rebounds.  Trevor Hill chipped in with 11 points including two three point baskets.

Christen Cunningham led Cordia with 10 points, seven assists, and three steals.  Cunningham was nine of 11 from the field and two of two from the free throw line.  Anthony Tagaloa added 19 points including three three point baskets.

Newport Central Catholic coach Ron Dawn started the following lineup: 6-6 Jr. Drew McDonald, 6-4 So. Ben Weyer, 6-8 Sr. Jake Schulte, 5-11 Jr. Zach Pangallo, and 6-2 Sr. Tanner Moeves.  Lexington Christian Academy Brad Carter countered with 6-6 Jr. Matt Rose, 6-7 Jr. Drew Trimble, 6-5 Sr. Michael Young, 5-10 Jr. John Stein, and 6-2 So. Trevor Hill.

 

Newport Central Catholic dominated play tonight with a 78-49 victory over Lexington Christian Academy.  The Thoroughbreds raced out to a 52-18 halftime lead.  Newport Central Catholic shot 59.6% from the field including eight of 12 from the three point line.  The Thoroughbreds connected on eight of 16 free throws, pulled down 34 rebounds, and scored 17 points off 14 Lexington Christian Academy turnovers.  LCA shot 34.6% from the field including five of 16 from beyond the arc.  The Eagles connected on eight of 11 free throws, pulled down 24 rebounds, and scored 10 points off eight Newport Central Catholic turnovers.

 

Zach Pangallo led Newport Central Catholic with 27 points including five three point baskets.  Pangallo was 11 of 15 from the field including five of six from beyond the arc.  Drew McDonald added 17 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, and two blocked shots.  Jake Schulte chipped in with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

 

Matt Rose led Lexington Christian Academy with 16 points and five rebounds.  6-5 Jr. Benton Nighbert added nine points on three three point baskets and five rebounds.

Austin Combs, and 6-2 Sr. Christen Cunningham.  Betsy Layne coach William Newsome countered with 6-2 So. Dalton Meade, 6-2 Jr. Dustin Rogers, 6-3 Jr. Peyton Case, 6-1 Sr. Dylan Hamilton, and 6-1 Sr. Dylan Meade.

 

Cordia raced out to a 32-8 first quarter lead on their way to an 80-52 victory over Betsy Layne.  Cordia shot 60% from the field including four of 12 from the three point line.  The Lions connected on 22 of 31 free throws, pulled down 35 rebounds, and scored 21 points off 14 Betsy Layne turnovers.  Cordia held a 30-13 advantage in bench points.  Betsy Layne shot 35.3% from the field including five of 23 from beyond the arc.  The Bobcats connected on 11 of 17 free throws, pulled down 17 rebounds, and scored eight points off 14 Cordia turnovers.

 

Anthony Tagaloa led Cordia with 19 points including two three point baskets, and five rebounds.  Christen Cunningham added 18 points, five rebounds, six assists, and three steals.  Oumar Keita pulled down 10 rebounds.

 

Peyton Case led Betsy Layne with 17 points including two three point baskets.  6-0 So. Andrew Tackett added 12 points and Dylan Meade chipped in with 11 points including two three point baskets.

Newport Central Catholic captured the championship with a 72-61 victory over Cordia.  Newport Central Catholic shot 51.4% from the field including two of eight from the three point line.  The Thoroughbreds connected on 32 of 42 free throws, pulled down 37 rebounds, and scored five points off seven Cordia turnovers.  Cordia shot 38.6% from the field including two of 12 from beyond the arc.  The Lions connected on 15 of 23 free throws, pulled down 27 rebounds, and scored 17 points off 13 Newport Central Catholic turnovers. 

 

Zach Pangallo led a balanced Newport Central Catholic scoring attack with 15 points and four assists.  Drew McDonald added 14 points and 11 rebounds.  Jake Schulte also scored 14 points, pulled down seven rebounds, and blocked three shots.  Ben Weyer recorded 11 points, six rebounds, and two blocked shots.  Tanner Moeves chipped in with 10 points.

 

Christen Cunningham led Cordia with 32 points including 11 of 17 free throws and five rebounds.  6-6 Jr. Richard Chapman added nine points and four rebounds.  Anthony Tagaloa chipped in with seven points and five rebounds.
