Marquette Catholic (26-2) vs. Vincennes Rivet (29-0)  Class A

 

Marques Catholic coach Katie Collington started the following lineup: 6-1 Sr. Sophia Nolan, 5-7 Sr. Claire Salyer, 6-1 Sr. Emma Nolan, 5-3 Sr. Morgan Crook, and 5-3 Sr. Emmery Joseph.  Vincennes Rivet coach Rick Marshall countered with 5-10 Sr. Molly Niehaus, 5-10 Jr. Tia Tolbert, 6-1 Sr. Grace Waggoner, 5-3 Jr. Macee Hamilton, and 5-10 Jr. Caroline Herman.

 

It appears as if history repeats itself as for the second year in a row as Marquette Catholic took advantage of a subpar shooting performance from the field (27.8%) by Vincennes Rivet to earn a 57-36 victory.  This not only gave Marquette Catholic the Class A title but it handed Vincennes Rivet their first loss of the year.  Marquette Catholic took an early lead and was never threatened as they led 27-13 at halftime and cruised to the victory. 

 

Marquette Catholic shot 50% from the field including seven of 14 from the three point line.  The Blazers connected on 10 of 20 free throws, pulled down 35 rebounds, and scored 11 points off 13 Vincennes Rivet turnovers.  Vincennes Rivet shot 27.8% from the field including one of 14 from beyond the arc.  The Patriots connected on five of seven free throws, pulled down 29 rebounds, and scored nine points off 16 Marquette Catholic turnovers.

 

Sophia Nolan led Marquette Catholic with 26 points including four three point baskets, 15 rebounds, four blocked shots, and three steals.  Nolan was 10 of 13 from the field including four of four from beyond the arc and two of four from the free throw line.  Twin sister Emma Nolan added 12 points ,six rebounds, three assists, and three blocked shots  .Emmery Joseph dished out six assists.

 

Caroline Herman led Vincennes Rivet with 11 points and eight rebounds.  Grace Waggoner added nine points and eight rebounds.  Tia Tolbert recorded eight points, seven rebounds, and four steals.  Molly Niehaus chipped in with seven points.

Oak Hill (24-3) vs. Winchester Community (26-3)  Class 2A

 

Oak Hill coach Todd Law started the following lineup: 6-0 Sr. Adrianna Trexler, 5-9 Sr. Kaela Robey, 6-1 Jr. Taylor Westgate, 5-5 Sr. Brittany McCorkle, and 5-8 Sr. Jenessa Hasty.  Winchester Community coach Holly Gurierrez countered with 6-0 Jr. Maddie Lawrence, 6-0 Sr. Shelby Miller, 6-3 Sr. Kira Robinson, 5-4 Sr. Hannah Graft, and 5-7 Jr. Becca Chamberlin.

 

Oak Hill rallied from a 32-23 deficit in the third quarter to defeat Winchester Community by a score of 54-42.  The score was tied 38-38 with six and a half minutes remaining in the game but Oak Hill finished the game on a 16-4 run.  There were two lead changes and four ties in the game.  Oak Hill shot 39.6% from the field including two of seven from the three point line.  The Golden Eagles connected on 10 of 18 free throws, pulled down 33 rebounds, and scored 19 points off 16 Winchester Community turnovers.  Winchester Community shot 29.8% from the field including three of 22 from beyond the arc.  The Golden Falcons connected on 11 of 14 free throws, pulled down 38 rebounds, and scored seven turnovers off six Oak Hill turnovers.

 

Kaela Robey led Oak Hill with 20 points and scored 11 of Oak Hill’s 20 points in the decisive final quarter.  Brittany McCorkle added 18 points including two three point baskets.  Taylor Westgate recorded eight points, nine rebounds, two blocked shots, and five steals.  Adrianna Trexler chipped in with six points and six rebounds. 

 

Maddie Lawrence led Winchester Community with 20 points including eight of nine free throws, 10 rebounds, and three assists.  Hannah Graft added nine points on three three point baskets.  Kira Robinson recorded five points and seven rebounds.

Northwestern (26-3) vs. Benton Central (26-4)  Class 3A

 

Northwestern coach Kathie Layden started the following lineup: 6-1 Jr. Madison Layden, 5-10 Sr. Allison Miller, 6-1 Jr. Kendall Bostic, 5-5 Sr. Katie Neher, and 5-8 Jr. Klair Merrell.  Benton Central coach David Baxter countered with 5-8 Sr. Emma Fisher, 5-7 Jr. Keely Meadows, 5-10 Jr. Audrey Strawsma, 5-4 Sr. Cassidy Minniear, and 5-5 Fr. Tressa Senesac.

 

Northwestern raced out to an 18-9 first quarter lead and were never threatened in a 61-39 victory over Benton Central.  Northwestern shot 44.2% from the field including two of eight from the three point line.  The Tigers connected on 21 of 32 free throws, pulled down 29 rebounds, and scored 23 points off 24 Benton Central turnovers.  Benton Central shot 37.5% from the field including four of seven from beyond the arc.  The Bison connected on 11 of 14 free throws, pulled down 22 rebounds, and scored five points off 11 Northwestern turnovers.

 

Kendall Bostic led Northwestern with 25 points, 15 rebounds, six blocked shots, and seven steals.  Madison Layden added 19 points including 10 of 12 free throws, three assists, and five steals. 

 

Audrey Strawsma led Benton Central with 11 points, six rebounds, and two steals.  Tressa Senesac added nine points.  Emma Fisher recorded seven points, five rebounds, and four assists.

Hamilton Southeastern (26-1) vs. Lawrence North (22-6)  Class 4A

 

Hamilton Southeastern coach Chris Huppenthal started the following lineup: 6-2 Jr. Sydney Parrish, 6-2 Sr. Amaya Hamilton, 6-2 Sr. Tayah Irvin, 5-6 Sr. Malea Jackson, and 5-8 Jr. Jackie Maulucci.  Lawrence North coach Chris Giffin countered with 5-10 Sr. Maddie Howe, 5-10 Jr. Katie Davidson, 5-11 So. Jayla Smith, 5-5 Jr. Kristian Young, and 5-9 Jr. Lauren Gunn.

 

Hamilton Southeastern trailed 35-34 after three quarters but went on a 13-2 run to start the final quarter to earn a 55-44 victory over Lawrence North.  Hamilton Southeastern was a perfect eight of eight from the free throw line down the stretch to ensure the victory.  There were seven lead changes and five ties in this game.

 

Hamilton Southeastern shot 45% from the field including four of 11 from the three point line.  The Royals connected on 15 of 16 free throws, pulled down 30 rebounds, and scored seven points off six Lawrence North turnovers.  Lawrence North shot 40% from the field including seven of 16 from beyond the arc.  The Wildcats connected on five of nine free throws, pulled down 17 rebounds, and scored 13 points off 10 Hamilton Southeastern turnovers.

 

Sydney Parrish led Hamilton Southeastern with 30 points including seven of seven free throws, 10 rebounds, and two blocked shots.  Amaya Hamilton added five points, eight rebounds, and four assists. 

 

Jayla Smith led Lawrence North with 15 points on five three point baskets.  Katie Davidson also scored 15 points and recorded four assists and four steals.  Lauren Gunn recorded seven points and two assists.

A special thanks to the IHSAA for providing all the info and up-to-date results of their events.

 

This was a very impressive day of basketball with a lot of individual talent on display.  I was also impressed with the size and athleticism of these young ladies with several players over 6-1 displaying both inside and outside skills.  Several of these ladies today will be playing at the next level.
