Henry Clay (1-0) vs. Lafayette (1-0)

Henry Clay coach Scott Cromwell started the following lineup:  5-10 Sr. Erica Coleman, 5-7 Jr. Tabnie Dozier, 6-1 So. Gwen Rucker, 5-5 So. Demetria Nichols, and 5-5 So. Raven Price.  Lafayette coach Allison Tate Denton countered with 6-0 Sr. Terrell Coles, 6-0 So. Bailey Dillender, 6-3 So. Que Christian, 5-5 Jr. Cassandra Lawson, and 5-6 Sr. Katie Kelly.

Henry Clay totally dominated the first quarter as they ran out to a 23-2 first quarter score on their way to a 60-47 victory over Lafayette.  Henry Clay connected on 14 of 20 free throws in the first quarter.  Lafayette only managed one of 14 from the field in the first quarter.  Lafayette pulled to within 14, 29-15, late in the second quarter but could not close the gap until late in the game after the outcome was decided.

Gwen Rucker led Henry Clay tonight with 15 points.  Rucker also rebounded well and was a force on defense.  Erica Coleman and Tabnie Dozier added 12 points each.  Cassandra Lawson led Lafayette with 18 points.  Bailey Dillender added 10 points and six rebounds, while Que Christian added eight points.

Both these teams are young with just two seniors on each roster.  Both squads have talent but turnovers doomed Lafayette today.  Lafayette and Henry Clay should both improve during the season.  Gwen Rucker appears to be headed for a breakout season as she combines a blend of size and athleticism.  Rucker actually plays taller than her listed height of 6-1.
